Dress $$ Question

I recently read that in bigger metropolitan areas, bride spend more on their dresses and saw the post about the receptions so I thought I'd ask...How much did you spend on your dress? Who is the designer and where did you get it?Mine was just over $2k by Justin Alexander Couture and I ordered it from Blush.

This seems less a question about how much one should expect to spend in this area, which the reception question was, than about bragging how much your francy designer dress cost. Nobody likes gloaters. BTW my fancy designer dress cost more than yours :)

I don't think that is how the OP meant her comments to come off.We frequently talk about budgets and how much we are spending on different aspects of our weddings.  It could be helpful for some brides who haven't gone shopping yet to know what other people in the area have spent.  I think it would also be helpful to know what to expect before they go shopping for the first time.  If anything, I think it's a fun poll.  I haven't shopped yet, so I have no input.

It would bother me if real-life people asked about how much my wedding cost, but online I think its helpful/interesting...My dress was $1600, I think, but I bought it in NY (I think the prices are comparable here).  Its Pronovias Barcelona, PIB.

My dress is a Jim Hjelm copy that I got for about $200.  I LOVE it!  Undertheseabride, I LOVE Blush!  It's a great little Boutique!  That was the first place I looked, but my dress budget was pretty small so it didn't work out.  I bet your dress is GORGEOUS!

I'm sorry if my post offended you, it was not meant that way. It was also not meant as gloating about my expensive dress. I posted today on "the dress" board about how frustrating it is to read bridal magazines because the least expensive dress I saw in one was over $4k and that most brides don't have that kind of budget.

underthesea i'm sorry i took it the wrong way. i've seen posts on the dress board where posters were definitely trying to brag. i should have realized the DC board is better than that :) this is what i get for responding to posts on low caffine. got my dress at Priscilla of Boston in Fairfax, it's Piper from the Vineyard Collection, it cost my poor surprised "it costs how much" mom $2600. I think part of the reason dresses cost so much in big cities is we have more options which often translates into big stores or fancy shops that carry the hot designers since they know they will have a greater chance of selling. Small cities may not have those options and the stores probably carry more middle of the road to less expensive dresses.

I went with Casablanca, dress was $740, shoes were $60, still need to get the undies but mom is making my veil, I'm wearing my sister's tiara and got the wedding earrings for my bday, so total will be well under my 1k limit.

Melissa Sweet Saffron: $4950 bought at Priscilla of Boston in Tyson'sThe reason the bigger metropolitan brides spend more on their dresses is because people make more money in a big metro area.  On top of that, I think it's also because they have access to the more expensive designers (but then again the reason the more expensive designers are in the bigger metro area is because people can afford it).

I have an Amsale gown which was over $3K.I just visited my parents in rural Pennsylvania, where we bought my Mom's gown at a local bridal shop.  The shop didn't really have any sample bridal gowns over $2K, but they could order something for you if you wanted a higher priced gown in the designers they carry (no one you would call couture). Expensive gowns just doesn't sell in the area where median income is $50+K.  Median income in DC is about $103K (source:  HUD).  This is why many brides from outside metro areas, who want to spend the cash, travel to the big city.  Case in point, all the brides traveling to Kleinfeld from all over the country.

I did not want to spend too much on a dress I would only wear for a few hours, but I ended up getting a Mori Lee dress, and I bought it online from the discounter netbride.com for $406 (I think it cost about twice that in the store?).  There are definitely gorgeous dresses out there you can get without spending a fortune.

This post is very interesting for me because I actually do not live in the DC area (but my fiance does) and I was wondering what it would have cost if I bought my attire up there.   In my smaller city in Florida we've got the couture stuff as well as the lower budget stuff.  I tried on a range (from $700 to $7,000 dresses)  and the one I looked best in was a Maggie Sottero for about $1200. The long line bra was $59.  (Shoes TBD.)  Also, I would up getting my dress in a store that took off the brand name labels off the dresses. You weren't allowed to know the brand name of the dress until you actually bought it. (They said because they were losing too much money with people going online to buy the same dress.) I have no idea if this practice is common in other cities and at first I thought it was annoying but in the end actually it helped me because this way I honestly picked what looked best on me rather than getting distracted by labels (which I sometimes tend to do.)

Mine was a Joli dress from I Do I Do in Gaithersburg for around $600 not including alterations. I Do I Do has mostly consignment dresses, but I ended up liking and ordering this one new. They do carry new lines for a few designers. Fortunately it's not too expensive as bridal gowns go--but still way more than I've ever spent on a dress!

I got mine at Davids Bridal in Springfield. It was $250 on sale (normally $300). I tried on lots of dresses and it just turned out to be my favorite as well as the cheapest.

Mine is Casablanca. I have a strange story though. I bought my first Casablanca 1859 in Savannah..it cost about $1150 and was a size 6. I got sick last year and was put on medicine that had me gain about 15 pounds so I had to re-order the dress in Virginia a Jeanettes. Luckily it was around $800 there in a size 8. I LOVE my dress.. I will be selling the 6 eventually.

I got my dress at Hitched in Georgetown (great shop to work with).  It is a $2800 Judd Waddell gown.http://www.brides.com/fashion/dresses/gallery/wedding_dresses/runway/designer/juddwaddell/detail/182062?offset=20

Haven't bought my dress yet, but I've tried on my share of "the ONES." The latest is the Belfast from Blue by Enzoani at Maria's Bridal in Fairfax. It's $1850, which I thought was actually pretty low for the type of gown that it is and for the designer. I'm still hunting, but as of right now, that one is the front runner. I'm trying to track down this particular Mia Solano dress - I've called about six local shops in MD and VA that carry Mia Solano but none of them have it. I'm going to check with the further out boutiques next but I'm starting to think that it's not meant to be. More of a reason to go with the Enzoani! Here is the Mia dress I'm trying to track down: http://www.miasolano.com/gallerydetails.asp?main_id=245&sname=&cname=Couture&cat_id=27&subcat_id=0

I got my dress at Hitched as well (love the Judd Waddell NOVA) - it was wayyyyy out of my budget but I just loved it so much. I walked away from it the first time but two months and 30 other wedding dresses tried on later I still couldn't get the original dress out of my head - plus the girls at Hitched were awesome so I went with it. It's a Modern Trousseau - Kelsey (3500 after 10% off since it was a trunk show weekend).

I have wondered about this too. I ordered mine from a small town because I saw other Brides online that had seen the same dress for twice what I paid. It's Ella 5356.

Mine was a Lazaro and was $4k.  I got it at P. Lawrence.  After trying on dresses with expensive fabrics I was hooked!
