Let's have a more active NC Board!

What are your favorite local restaurants?  Not chains, but restaurants that you can only find in North Carolina!

My favorites:

Cary- Herons at the Umstead.  nomnomnom.

Raleigh- Zely and Ritz, Second Empire

Asheville- Corner Kitchen, Rezaz

And...go!

  • You know. . . . .This makes me sad, because I can't think of any non-chain places we eat.

There's an Assagios here in Fuquay that we LOVE, there I think there is another one in Apex or Cary too?

We really need to try new places to eat. . .

I will say though, that there's a place in Monroe NC, called The Oasis. It's nothing special, but my God they have the best hotdogs and lemonade!

The Triangle is such a foodie area.  I think your next assignment is to get on Urban Spoon, go to a non-chain and report back (:  Its a shame to not take advantage of the deliciousness around here.

Oh, and my hotdog place is Circus in Cary.  The hotdogs aren't anything special but they make the best milkshakes and malts i have EVER had.
  • We've actually talked about that. We honestly don't go out to sit down places that often though.

Our plan was to use the ABCs and for each letter, go to a new place to eat.

FI and I started doing this last year as our new years resolution.  It was a lot of fun but, like most resolutions we stopped!  I can't remember some of the places we went to though so I'm no help.

  • Seriously? You don't eat anywhere non-chain.  You're missing out!  It doesn't have to be a sit-down place to be good and not a chain.

Raleigh: Dos Taquitos, Sitti, the Brass Grill was awesome but they closed.

Apex: Salem Street Pub (website under construction)

Morrisville: Pepper's Market & Sandwich Shop (not a sit down place!)

    Durham: Rick's Diner, Piper's Deli

    High Point: The Claddagh

Thomasville: Rosa Mae's Cafe  (their website sucks)

Winston Salem: Foothills Brewing (also a restaurant)

Boone: Pepper's Restaurant (not related to the Pepper's in Morrisville)

Hickory: Old German Schnitzel Haus  (spendy, but good)

Asheville: Bouchon, ditto the Corner Kitchen, Tomato Jam Cafe
Asheville people should really check out http://www.airasheville.org/
  • MUNI are you in the triangle area?
  • Charlotte:  The Diamond, The Open Kitchen, Boudreaux's, Salvador Deli & Lupie's Cafe

    Boone:  The Peddler (awesome steaks)

Asheville:  I think the name is Early Girl, it's downtown and I think it's an all veggie menu

  • Charlotte area:
Red Rocks Cafe (one in Southpark and one in Birkdale)
    Amelies French Bakery
    Vida
The Little Village Grill (not really sit down, get it to go for lunch)
    Pomodoro's (in Mooresville) ahhhmmmaaazing pizzas

    Asheville area:
    Tupelo Honey... OMG.
    12 Bones BBQ
    Barley's Tap Room... Beefalo Burgers
  • Ooo!  I am excited to have new places to try in the triangle!  So far, we really like Tribecca Tavern in Cary.

In Wilmington, Flaming Amy's Barn and Flaming Amy's Bowl.  I seriously consider moving back to Wilmington daily just because I miss those two places so much.

  • OH! and Lexington BBQ and BBQ Center in Lexington.  Or one of the other fifty BBQ places in Lexington.  All others are inferior.  (Except maybe B's in Greenville)
  • I may eat somewhere that's not a chain and just don't realize it, but usually if we're getting to-go food it's Chipolte, Salsaritas, or the chinese place here.

We need more date-nights. I've had talks with DH about it because we have 'home movie nights', but I'd really like to get out and go do more, even if on a budget.

  • Hi MUNI!

I can't think of any non-chain places. Hmm.
  • I know getting a local coupon book helped us try new places and save money doing it.

  • WAIIIITTTT. . . .do bakeries count? If so, Stick Boy in Fuquay is freaking awesome! Their Red Velvet cupcakes are to die for in my opinion!

OOOH!! They gave away free cookies and cupcakes the other week for their 4th birthday. I got a red velvet one and have been craving them ever sense!

We were originally going to have them do our wedding cake, it was just a little out of our budget. I LOVED our wedding cake, but sometimes wish we'd done Stick boys too.

    What cupcake are you getting?

  • Well, we actually just sent them a list of flavors we wanted, so I don't know if its flavors they normally do.

We're doing dark chocolate cake with caramel filling, sea salt caramel buttercream frosting, and a chocolate ganache topping, almond cake with amaretto buttercream, and lemon cake with lemon curd filling and lemon buttercream frosting.

    I'm so essited!

Oh man those sound really good! Have you had a tasting yet?

  • We actually haven't and aren't planning to.  A family member used to work for that co, so we've had SO much Stick Boy goodness that we trust it'll be awesome.
  • Oh sweet!!
I have to admit, I LOVE baking and have always thought it'd be awesome to work for a place / in a place like Stick Boys.

I also have to admit, the smell that hits you when you walk into their place. . . it's good enough to make you drool.

  • I think working in a bakery would make one sick of eating baked goods pretty quickly.

FI used to work for one f the local bakeries, and he pretty much never ate their food after a couple of months!
  • Now I'm hungry. Asheville: totally agree with you all about Rezaz and the Corner Kitchen, but Limones is my must stop in the Ville. Wilmington: love Amy's Bowl! And K38, plus Freddie's in Kure Beach. Raleigh: Angus Barn is just iconic. Sitti and Solomon's are wonderful Mediterranean. I really like Cafe Capistrano for Mexican--a little less scary than Dos Taquitos. And, because I can eat breakfast any time: The Flying Biscuit. Now, it's time for dinner!
