WTF Social Security Office?

So I just went and legally changed my last name a couple weeks ago.  I know, I know...I've been married a year and just never did it.  But anyway, I got my new card in the mail and my effing middle name is misspelled.  The ONLY thing I told them to change was my last name.  There is no reason they should have even touched my middle name.  So either A) My middle name has been misspelled with the SSA my whole life (my original card just says Holly E. Lastname...so I'm not sure.  But it's correct on my birth certificate...) or B) the dumb dumb that changed my last name decided to delete a letter from my middle name as well - just for funsies.  So anyway...I'm super annoyed and now I have to go do it all over again.  Maybe it's my fault for not looking closely at my middle name when they asked me to check that the new name was right, but I had no reason to think I should! Grrr.

Re: WTF Social Security Office?

  • That's really random! You'd think the process of changing someone's NAME would require some triple-checking just to make sure it's right - how annoying!
  • The SS office was so annoying. Did you have to fill out multiple forms in order to change your name? If so, that is odd that she would have missed something like that. The woman who helped me got my address wring, but the name is MUCH more important. I'd be pissed if I had to do it all over again. The process is frustrating.

  • I didn't have to fill out anything. I just handed her my marriage license, she changed it in the computer, then printed something out and asked me to verify that the last name was correct.
  • Yeah that is weird.  Surprisingly, the SS office was the easiest step for me changing my name.  However, my new last name sucks monkey balls and I've had it misspelled or badly mispronounced 7 times already since changing names less than 2 weeks ago.  I already miss my maiden name.

  • That sucks, especially given how long the lines can be at SS offices!  GL!  When my FSIL and FBIL married, the marriage license office  really screwed up my FSIL's married name.  Different names, but for example:  Elizabeth Jane Smith married Joseph Charles Brown, and her married name was to be Elizabeth Smith Brown.  But the marriage license showed her married name to be Elibeth Smrown Joseph.  Yeah, they screwed up all three names, and even had her new last name as his first.  Good job, guys!
  • Dude, that does suck. They misspelled my parents names...pretty bad.  When the guy gave me the form to look over, I asked if those needed to be correct, and he told me no.

  • ugh...I spent three hours waiting to change mine, I would not want to do that again. I bet it was just someone's screw up this time, although I could see having a middle name misspelled and just never realizing it.Last time I got my driver's license renewed the DMV told me it wasn't valid and I didn't exist in their system. I was like, wtf do you mean I don't exist? I've had this license for 3 years and the one before it for 4 years. Turns out the genius I worked with last time combined my middle name and my first name and made it my first. So when she looked up Kristi Middle Last I didn't exist, but KristiMiddle NoMiddle Last did.Good luck :)
  • katie - 3 HOURS?  holy shiit.  My wait was like 10 min.

  • Yeah, 3 hours at the ss office, then only about 5 minutes at the DMV. I think most people in there were applying for green cards and work visa's and things though. Just one of the many disadvantages of living near DC.
  • Wow, that does suck.  It was pretty scary in there.

  • I was following another girl who was getting her name changed too. I was originally sitting a couple seats to the right and this one guy was trying to hit on her. She was really sweet about it and then was like "So I'm here to change my last name to my husbands, why are you here?" and he literally got up and sat down next to the next available young female. I started cracking up and then found her again at the DMV.and side note: in VA you aren't allowed to smile for your driver's license photo, wtf?
  • In MO we can smile for drivers license pics, but when I went to walgreens for my passport photo I couldn't smile.  Irritating, since I'm not so cute when I don't smile.
