I don't want our packages stolen while we're gone

Does anyone know if you can require UPS/Fedex to get a signature when they deliver stuff (instead of just leaving it outside your door)? We're going to be gone for 3 weeks for all the wedding stuff and I'd hate for our packages to sit outside our apartment and get stolen.I looked all over their websites and googled, but all the info I found was for people sending packages not receiving them.TIA!

Re: I don't want our packages stolen while we're gone

  • You could leave a note, but then you are advertising that you are away. Is there a friend or neighbor that can pick up your packages and store them at their house until you are back? i would think that is the best option.
  • In order for them to require a signature, the packages have to be sent as priority, signature required.  Since they won't be unless the sender chooses that delivery option, I would try calling your local fedex or ups offices and see if they will hold your items while you are away.
  • If you live in an apartment complex, UPS and FEDEX will not leave the box outsided of the door.  They will leave a note and make you pick it up.  However, they will only make 3 delivery attempts and hold the box for 30 days, I think.  Then they send it back to the shipper. You can give them a call and they can explain your options.  They won't have the information on the website.FEDEX 1800gofedex.  You will have to look up UPS.Hope that helps

  • actually vsgal that's not entirely true atleast from my experience. I had both UPS and FedEx leave a package at my door when I wasn't at home to recieve it - on one occasion I was upset with UPS because 1) they didn't update their delivery status for about 4 days (package was left on my balcony that I never went out on so I didn't see it) and 2) when I called to complain about it they wouldn't let me because it was not a valid complaint because according to the lady I talked to the drivers have the right to just leave your package if it doesn't require a signatureThat may have changed since it was about a year or so ago when that happenedAnywho to answer your question I would see if they can hold your packages or ask a friend or neighbor to pick them up for you

  • We've only had UPS not leave the package once- when we ordered something to have signature required.  Every other time, we'd come home from work to find it sitting outside our house.
  • Talk to UPS if it isn't signature required they can drop the package most of the time they will leave it on a balcony.  FI is a UPS Driver. If you tell them they should work with you.
  • I'm guessing that these are wedding gifts sitting outside your door?  You can change the delivery address on almost all gift registries.  If they don't have a separate ship to address, then tell them you moved and give a relatives address.     If you call USPS they will hold all of your packages until you get back in town & then you have to go pick them up, I don't know about ups/Fedex.
  • Give a key to a friend or neighbor, that's what we did. Worked out fine.

  • We were gone for that long and we just had a neighbor bring them in for us.   We also had a friend who had a key stop by and check on the place from time to time.  So between the 2 it was fine.

  • Ditto the changing address suggestion. If I was in your situation I would probably have the packages delivered to a friend or family member. You can change the address on the websites of the stores where you have registered.
