registry

I was wondering how far out from the wedding did you register. Did you shop around first before deciding what to register for or did you just pick the store you wanted to go to and get everything at one store?

Re: registry

  • We registered about 2 months before our wedding, but mostly because we were only engaged 3 months. We did very little shopping around and did most of our registering online because...well...registering sucks and doing it online was much, much easier.

  • We registered 7 months out. No one really buys anything until 3 months before though.....unless your shower is near.

  • We registered about a month before invites went out. We went to Kohls, Target and BBB. Since we were already pretty familiar with the stores already, we just went in, got set up and went to town!

  • We registered in Feb/March for our October wedding. It wasn't too early (we've only had 2 things discontinued), and it gave us something to do when it was cold/snowy.We knew the two stores where we wanted to register (BB&B and Target), and decided we would get certain things from each store (china, everyday dishes, flatware from BB&B, bedding and bath from Target, etc.) We decided to register for everything we saw and liked, and then I went back with the online registries and removed duplicates or things we really didn't need.

  • If I recall, we registered in January(ish) for our April wedding. We originally registered at Target, but then I called and had it deleted due to the return policy, and we went and re-registered at BB&B. I then added stuff on-line. We also registered at Lowe's, but they've since cancelled their registry program. My MIL registered us (we didn't know until after the fact) at a small boutique-type store in her hometown for the locals.
  • We registered about 9 or 10 months before the wedding, mostly that early just because I was excited to do it and wanted to start getting ideas.  I picked Bed Bath & Beyond and registered online.  I would have checked out Target, but at the time they had a terrible return policy which I think has now been changed for the better.

  • I registered at about 5 or 6 months.  I've changed it a lot since then because, well, I've got a lot of time on my hands, and it's tough when you haven't seen things in person to tell if it's really what you want!  Anyway, we just went with BBB since they have the easiest return policy, and everyone on our guest list can get to one.
  • I registered about 3 months out which was good. Gave us about a month to refine the list. We started getting gifts as soon as the invites were sent.  If there's a shower, do it before those invites go out. A couple of folks last night were warning about registering too early b/c of stock/price changes, etc. That's definitely happened to us.
  • BTW we only registered at one place b/c I'm older and didn't really need much of anything. From what I've seen on here though, folks can register at up to 3 places without it seeming weird.
  • We registered about 10 months out.  I honestly didn't think it was too early, and family members got us gifts from the registry for birthdays and christmas and such, which was great. We didn't really shop around, we pretty much knew we wanted to register at Target, bed bath and beyond, and crate and barrel, but after hearing horror stories about Target we really got rid of most of the stuff from there and focused on the other two. We just went in the stores, got a little price gun happy, then edited/added/took away unnecessary stuff online.

  • Oh and target still sucks for the most part.  We got doubles of almost every single thing we got from there because it takes more than 24 hours for the registry to be electronically updated, so it doesn't say something was bought for at least a day.  Luckily, most of the doubles also came with gift receipts so no problem there, but the one that didn't have a receipt they wouldn't take back at all.

  • We only registered at BB&B. We're having a smaller wedding (50-75 people) and wanted to keep everything low-key. We registered 6 months out, which gave me tons of time to tweak it. We went into the store to set up the registry and since then, I go online to tweak it.
  • We're waiting until the last possible minute - which for us will be slightly early due to the fact that I'll need to fly across the country for my shower and it will be timed so I'm not finding myself on a plane so many times, so close together. We have no idea where we will live once we're married, and delaying it as long as possible will give me time to develop some sort of sense of style. It hasn't happened in 27 years, but I hold out hope.I think as long as you're registered by the time your shower invitations go out, you should be fine.We likely won't do any shopping around beforehand. What we're going to need is the extreme basics - everyday flatware, dishes, glasses, etc - and I figure you can find something tolerable anywhere. If you're upgrading things or have really specific tastes, I could see shopping around first, though.

  • We registered about 5 months from our wedding date.  It was pretty overwhelming and Macy's was the first place we registered and by the time we got home, both of us were crabby and I hated 1/2 the stuff on there so I changed some things. We also registered at BB&B and one of the manager's worked with us for about 3 hours and walked us through everything and that was great, he really helped us narrow things down and make sure that we had things of all different price ranges.  I also registered at a local shop here in St. Louis
  • I think it largely depends on where you are from as well. Where I am from most people only buy gifts off the registry as engagement presents and shower gifts and then give money for the actual wedding gift. That being said, we registered in January 2009 (just after getting engaged) for our January 2010 wedding.
  • We registered in May, and we are getting married in October. We registered for Fiesta ware, which discontinues colors often, so we wanted to wait till the 6 month mark at least. We only registered at one place and went to a registry event there which was actually a lot of fun. We didn't go prepared, just wandered around, but then went back over everything online. I do recommend wearing comfortable shoes, it took a lot longer then I thought and I was wearing heels.
