At-Home Hair Color

I want to color my hair, but haven't done it in ages.  If I wasn't saving for the wedding and a house down payment, I would go to the salon.  But I would feel too guilty paying to have it colored when I could do it at home and save lots of money.  My hair is very healthy right now and I'm concerned about damaging it.  I used to color it at home all the time, but that was 10 years ago!  I'm sure dyes have changed (hopefully for the better) since then. Can you recommend a good at-home color brand that won't fry my hair?

Re: At-Home Hair Color

  • I've always had good luck with the Feria line by L'Oreal. What color are you going to do?
  • I'm a natural red-head.  It has changed from orange to strawberry blonde to auburn and is now basically brown.  I want my red back!  And recently...I have a few hairs that I keep saying are blonde - but they are really the dreaded "G" word - I'm so bummed about that!
  • It's not home coloring, but it's a cheaper alternative than any salon I've been to before... I went to Hair Cuttery this weekend and got partial foils done.  She actually did a great job a few months ago so I went back and again - great job on both color and cut.  It was $72 total for foils, wash, cut, & dry.  I thought it was a great deal and I'm pretty sure that this was more expensive than just a one color application because of the time needed for the foils.  They use Redken products...  anyway - figured I'd throw that out there as an alternative.

  • As another alternative option... I have used the Aveda Institute in the Chicago area (they have them in a bunch of locations)!  I would get full foils, cut and style for around $60.  I used to be scared that they were student but they do a better job than some of the reputable salon's I have been to because they are being supervised and graded!HTH!
  • I am a natural red head as well, so when I dye it is just to another shade of red since nothing else seems to hold in my hair.  I like L'oreal hair colors (all lines).  They are suppose to have good gray coverage (I don't have gray yet so I don't know personally but this is what others I have known reccomended).  Sometimes I will be ambishious and do a kit that does all over dye and highlighting, but I have not have not had much success with highlights with my red hair.  The highlights over bleach my hair and turn it a funky brass blonde color, so for my red hair I stick to low lights.
  • Also, check the Sunday paper.  I can always find hair dye on sale or a coupon or both.  Sometimes I can get hair dye as cheap as $1.50 per both with a sale and coupon.
  • I use either Feria or more recently L'Oreal Superior Preference .My hair is naturally VERY dark brown and I dye it dark auburn. I really like the conditioner they give you with the kit. It makes your hair very shiny. I use it sparingly, every other day or so and I get lots of compliments on my color (it looks just a little more enchanced than natural).
