Donations instead of favors?

We're thinking of doing donations instead of favors.  Has anybody else done this?  Thoughts?  Have any of you been to weddings where people did this?  Did you miss the favors at all?

I think we're going that route, and I've never been to a wedding like this but a lot of times favors aren't grabbed and you end up with a lot of left overs.

Honestly, of all the weddings I've been to I can never remember the favor.  I would have rather people donated the money. We're thinking about doing it too using the "donation chips" idea where you give your guests the choice of 2-3 charities to place their chips towards.  We're thinking of giving each guest two chips worth $2 each.

We went to one recently, an outdoor wedding, and they did that. They also had in a big basket printed beer koozies(cheapie ones) and lighters(tacky!) but, we did not miss the favors at all!!

Lots of ppl do that now. My friend did it at her wedding and had a sign on each table about the donation. If you opt to do favors and are concerned about them getting left behind, I think edible favors are the way to go. We also had the band make an announcement at the end of the night to not forget your favors, so we really only had a couple left behind.

My Fiance and I do a lot of volunteering and service work.  So this for us was a simple decision.  I think people will appreciate it more because it really is who we are.  We are doing the chip idea as well.  Since we are not doing formal seating (our wedding is going to be casual and simple) we are attaching the chips to the programs using ribbons.

We are getting married in Chapel Hill and are both UNC alumni so we are doing donations to the memorial funds of Jason Ray (the UNC mascot) and Eve Carson (the UNC student body pres) in lieu of favors. We'll be printing small cards explaining both funds and a little bit about each person, since I knew Eve and my FI knew Jason. I personally think this is a great alternative to little chotchky (sp??) things that no one will ever use or remember. JMHO
