Wedding Woes

Re: name change

post and run, but i changed my middle name to my maiden name - that way i still got to keep it. I wasn't going to hyphenate (cause my maiden is 7 letters, married is 8, and it just seems pretentious) so I figured this was a good compromise.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's what I'm doing. I also think I'm keeping my maiden name on FB. That way when future potential employers try to google me, they will not find out about any of my shenanigans.

I did that, too.  Except no one sees it, because all of my companies' have used first.last@companyname as their default email addresses. When I got new business cards, I specifically put down all 3 names, and they took the middle/maiden out and put an initial instead. So yeah, I tried that. It didn't work.

I'm considering this.  I do have some publications out there.

I do, too. But publications under my new name have my maiden name as my middle name. So people can figure it out. You can also change your name for personal use, and keep the maiden name professionally.

Keeping my maiden name professionally wouldn't have worked either.  Once I changed the SS card, they had to change it in the payroll system, which talked to many of the other systems. It was ridiculous.I suppose the way to go with that would have been to just leave my maiden name alone and let people use my married name if they wanted, which I would have been fine with.  Whatever. That ship has sailed. I need to build a bridge. Add your metaphor here.  But I do regret it and feel compelled to tell other people about my regrets to help make sure the same thing doesn't happen to them.  It's not a mistake for everyone, but I think it was for me.

for the record, if you go to 2 middle names, it screws up all sorts of forms for the rest of forever. And it pisses me off that they always just use the 'first' middle name when, if they can only use one, I want them to use the 2nd.

I did this, as well. I hated my middle, I loved my maiden, but it was a btch for pronunciation and spelling. My mother did this when she married, and if Bacon ever gets married, I'll encourage her or her spouse to do it, as well, depending on who's changing names. My FB has my full name - you can see why I went from one to the other.
