  • 1) 1500 square feet2) Around $12003) Kitchen. Our appliances came with the house and they need to be replaced anyway.  Also the couple before us thought it would be a good idea to paint a big room sunshine yellow. Its like big bird pissed all over my kitchen.

  • 1) What is the size of your home? Our house is two-stories and 2771 square feet.  When we finish the basement, we will have over 4000 sq. feet of living space.2) What are your property taxes (before tax rebates)?Probably around $2500+ a year.  (I don't really know because it's set aside in escrow and paid automatically)3) What would you update first...kitchen or basement rec roomThe basement.  It's unfinished.  The house is new, so everything in the kitchen is updated.  There's a couple of things I want to do in the house - like some tile work in the downstairs bath, tile around the fireplace and improving on the backsplash.  All in due time.

Around $2,000 3) What would you update first...kitchen or basement rec room (not for resale purposes...for your own comfort/living)? Kitchen. I spend a lot of time there. • 1)  800+ sq ft condo 2) Well that is a tough one,  there is a court order from 2006 that the VI government can not issue property taxes until they revamp the system.    I still pay about $800-900 a year in order not to get hit with a huge bill once they start issusing them again.3)  I updated my condo before I moved it.  I replaced all the floors, re-did the bathroom, took out walls in the kitchen, replaced the cabinet doors, added washer/dryer.What about insurance? I pay $3600 per year in insurance, now that sucks.

  • 1) What is the size of your home?1100 SF Condo on the 2nd Floor2) What are your property taxes (before tax rebates)?I can never remember cause they're paid with the mortgage3) What would you update first...kitchen or basement rec room (not for resale purposes...for your own comfort/living)? Basement doesn't apply, but even if it did, the Kitchen.  I LOVE cooking and love the kitchen so I'd do that first.
  • 1) Approx. 4500 livable sq. ft. - 3 bedrooms, 2 bath, farmhouse style, plus 10 acres of non-farmable land and 11 taxable outbuildings 2) 2700/year, ish 3) Master bedroom/suite - we'd expand the size, add on a bathroom, redo the closet. Almost everything else has been completely redone. I would also add a deck/porch, but the bedroom would probably come first.

  • I'll answer based on our new home which we move into next week! 1) 3000 squ ft 2) No taxes (beauty of Panama) 3) that's tough... we don't have a basement, but I'd say kitchen, he'd say rec/TV room
  • 1) What is the size of your home?Apprx. 1400, 3 bed, 1 bath.2) What are your property taxes (before tax rebates)?I believe right at $1,000. But, we are covered under Homestead Exemption.3) What would you update first...kitchen or basement rec room (not for resale purposes...for your own comfort/living)? We actually remodeled the whole entire house when we bought, but now, I would add on a master bath. Our 1 bath only has a stand up shower.

  • P2, What did you decide about the house? Did I miss it?We're staying put. My aunt and uncle are going to buy and renovate my grandpa's place, my dad is going to buy 1/3 of it, we'll probably move there in 5-10 years. I guess I should answer my own poll...our house is 1100 sq ft/floor (split/bi-level home) with attached single garage, double detached garage. Our taxes are $978/year (went down $400 this year!). We're trying to decide if we want to do the kitchen of basement (hence why I asked - both rooms DESPERATELY need it).Lynda - good point about insurance. Yours is crazy! Ours is exactly $1200/year. This is because we're in unprotected territory (from a fire department). We're 9 miles from the closes FD, and need to be 7 to be protected. This costs us an extra $400/year.

  • This is not my home, but his and his ex-wife's, but hey, I live in it too.1) What is the size of your home? - About 1300 sq feet. 4 smallish bedrooms/office, 2.5 bath, no basements around here.2) What are your property taxes (before tax rebates)? - Ah, I have no idea.3) What would you update first...kitchen or basement rec room (not for resale purposes...for your own comfort/living)?  If we were going to be the ones staying in the house in the long term instead of her, I'd get rid of the "formal" dining area up against the kitchen and make it into a bigger kitchen with a breakfast nook. Buddy and I can barely stand in the kitchen at the same time, it's so ridiculously small. Definitely not bought by people who cook.
On bed rest since Groundhog's Day and every day since has been exactly the same.

Basement. Our kitchen isn't ideal, but it'll work for now. Our basement is unfinished and gross and I'm dying to fix it up and get a pool table
  • P2 - That's what I get for living on the water in a hurricane zone.  $2400 of the insurance is just property/flood.  The remaining is content insurance. I know people who have to pay $10k for insurance on crappy places.

  • 1) What is the size of your home? 1950 sq ft. 3br/2ba +study2) What are your property taxes (before tax rebates)? I should know this, but I don't. I pay into Escrow.3) What would you update first...kitchen or basement rec room (not for resale purposes...for your own comfort/living)? Kitchen. We don't have basements in my part of the country. My house is only 3 years old, so I wouldn't need to update for a while.

  • 1. 1100 sq ft, I think.  Somewhere around there. 2. $1800 this year.  Only good thing about the house losing value this year, taxes better be less next year. 3. It would depend on the state of the kitchen.  If the kitchen was workable, and just needed some cosmetic upgrades, but the appliances were acceptable, I'd do the rec room first.  I'd put in a nice bar.  If the kitchen wasn't really workable for me, that would be the first upgrade.
  • 1) Approx. 2800 sq ft. 3 bdrm, 2 bath2) Approx. $28003) We already updated half of the basement for his "man cave" which was a great addition. Next is the kitchen!
  • 1) What is the size of your home?  1200 sq. ft.2) What are your property taxes (before tax rebates)?  $1300/year3) What would you update first...kitchen or basement rec room (not for resale purposes...for your own comfort/living)?  I gutted the whole house so everything is brand new (well, three years old).
  • lol buttaflai @ the man cave reference... we as well have a man cave and refer to it as such (although it now looks like Michaels and Hobby Lobby exploded exploded in it). FI is less than thrilled for the time being!

  • 1) It is a TH, approx 2500 sq ft (including basement) 2) Approx $2300 / yr 3) Kitchen. We need new counter tops, some of the tiles of the floor are cracked from the previous owners, need a few new applainces. Our basement is already re done. We remodeled that first when we moved in.

  • 1) 1870 square feet 2) Not sure. I'd have to check my paperwork. 3) Depends. Kitchen if I cooked or baked a lot, basement if I'd rather hang out watching TV, etc. Personally, I don't have a basement and my house was just built, so I'd upgrade the yard.
  • 1) 1800 2) Currently under 1k because it was a shell when it was last assessed. 3) Don't need to do either.  Basement is not tall enough to have a room and kitchen is new.  I want to add an addition to our roof deck.  The deck is currently on the third floor (the roof of the second floor) off of the third floor room.  I want a staircase to the roof of the third floor and a hot tub.  I don't know if it's possible though, but FI will be looking into it in September. I also own two other houses that are 2600 square feet each and taxes are about around 2k each.  I would love to update the kitchens in both and there's also 2 bathrooms that I want to remodel.  The basements aren't sealed yet so they can't be finished.  I would also love to tear off the backrooms (mudrooms) and replace them with a really fancy laundryroom/pantry.This is in Philly.
