• Mica, I have every intention of speaking to the doc about this as well :) For what it's worth, I sincerely doubt you're a quack.

H was called a quack by one of his patients once.  He said, "If I'm a quack, what do ducks do?"

Without missing a beat, the patient said: "F*&k other ducks."

H had to run out of the room because he couldn't hold back the laughter.

Eta: Thanks guys.  I feel better.  Free online consults all around!

• OMG, I just LOLed for real at that.

• My FSIL has a clarisonic and swears by it.  I have the same mouth/chin disaster area, and it cleared up in the fall.  I attribute it's clear-up to 2 things: 1. FI shaved his goatee.   2. I started using Mary Kay's blemish toner with salycic acid in it.  I don't know which did the trick, but he's never growing chin hair and I'm never giving up my toner!

I hardly ever break out anymore.  I don't take BCP, but I do know that certain brands gave me horrible breakouts when I was in my mid-20s.
• I took I think it was 5 different BCPs and the only one that helped my acne and didn't make it worse was yasmin.  I loved everything about yasmin actually!!  My skin was so clear and I had no other issues with it like I'd had on all the other ones.  I only went off it because i developed ulcers and I freaked out that it could even possibly have been the pill (although in hindsight i think it was unrelated, I'd rather just stay off any pills for now).  I forget what the other pills you mentioned were though.  I HATED orthocyclen (not the tri, the regular one), alesse made me super duper hungry all the time, i forgot the other one, and actually Loestrin was okay and my skin was clear on that one too. I think I went off for bloating though. I dunno, I think it's trial and error with these things.  what I like other people hate so who knows.  HTH
I can't take BC because of heart problems, so I have an answer outside of that which you are asking (So I'm being THAT girl).  My acne seems to be hormonal, too.  I broke down and bough a clarisonic a few weeks ago, because nothing else in the world was working.  After an initial purge, I have the most awesome skin in the world.  I mean seriously...amazing.  It's even already started correcting older acne scars.  I usually don't promote spending $200 on a single product, but this thing is amazing.  And I can report that this cycle I have not had a single blemish.  Not a one.  So there's that.   Usually I can tell it's coming because my chin will start to get bumpy, but this month I had to judge it's approach based upon my irrational behavior alone.  Andplusalso, you can get a "body" attachment for it to smooth the rest of your skin, and it doubles as jewlery cleaner (It's probably not supposed to be used on jewelry, but it was $200  .I'm using it how I want).
Posted by The Mel and Todd Show
ohhh my friend loves her clarisonic thingie.  that you said your acne is hormonal though and it's still helping makes me intriqued!
• I'm on the generic form of Seasonale (older version of Seasonique) and it works for me because I only get my period every three months. Less time for my skin to freak out and more time in between to recover.

I also use the Clarisonic and it's amazing.

Mel, what cleanser do you use with it?

This is where all of mine is too. Mine has substantially cleared up after I switched to Seasonale, started using mineral makeup, use the Clarisonic when I remember and use Clinique's foaming face wash.
• Oh and I got the mini-clarisonic from QVC and paid around $125 for it in 4 easy installments :-P
• Olay has a Clarisonic knock off that I paid $30 for.  I LOVE it.  LOVE.  It's definitely helped my skin.  I also switched to oil cleansing recently and I'm happy with that too, for my breakouts and pores.

This is the exact cleanser I use with it.  I use it twice a day, religiously.  I follow up with a toner and moisturizer.  I stopped using all anti-acne products entirely (no BP or SA) and it's still working great.  I figured if my skin was clean enough, I didn't need them anymore.  So I just use a witch hazel and rose water toner and plain old aveeno moisturizer.  I'm amazed.  I thought I'd be using a three part acne regiment for the rest of my life to obtain only moderately clear skin.
• Yeah I'm allergic to BP, so I thought I was just stuck with acne for the rest of my life. It's awesome. I have to talk with my dermatologist though because it's moved elsewhere on my body. :(

Tea tree oil is a decent substitution for BP--plus it doesn't bleach things.  I've been using it on my back and I can't believe the difference it's made.

You could try a product with salicyclic acid instead.  My skin doesn't respond to BP but it does to SA.  I guess my skin prefers an acidic pH :)

• no problem. youll want to dilute it with water and do a patch test because some people are sensitive to it but it has been awesome for me. i do three tablespoons of tea tree oil to twenty tablespoons water and keep it in an airtight container. then i just dunk a cotton ball and swipe it on like toner. youll want to give it time to dry before you get dressed or youll smell like it all day. i got the oil at target for about five bucks.

I dont know if this has been mentioned and I hope it doesnt double post because I tried posting from my phone and it wouldnt work, but have you thought about assessing your diet? I tend to get really bad zits on my chin area as well and I believe it is caused by an estrogen issue specifically (or another one of those lady hormones) and since I cut out dairy its become WAY more manageable. I think it has something to do with the hormones that are in dairy that causes the breakouts. Every time I DO eat dairy, i break out the next day like clockwork, but as long as I dont have any they are fewer and far between.
• Depending on when your wedding is, my only suggestion is to get to the doctor ASAP.  I was on 3 different bc before I found one that worked for me w/out worsening achne, cramps, etc.  It's all about your body and what works with your chemicals.  For what it's worth, Yaz was the worst for me.  I was sick as a dog on it.  But I know some people who like it.

Oh, that's terrible news. And no, I hadn't really considered my diet being a factor. I go through a gallon of milk in about 5 days usually. And that's by myself because H is lactose intolerant. I freaking love milk. And butter and cheese and sour cream and anything else that comes out of a cow.

Usually the organic stuff doesn't have the hormones in it.  It costs a lot more though :(.

i miss the hell out of dairy because i used to eat and drink a lot, but i look like a total beast when i eat it so i just put up with missing it. i hope its not that but i do remember someone a while back saying the same thing about cutting out dairy (that chick in mexico??).
• Oh yeah, I do remember Expat saying that. She's the reason I hate when people post BC questions. That's like all she ever posted about.

• I've been having major breakouts in the last couple years as well. I totally want a Clairsonic but can't spend the $$ on it right now. I got a facial brush (looks like a giant round toothbrush) from Sephora for $5 a while back and have been using it every day. The acne is getting better and I've noticed that my older acne scars are starting to fade as well.

I usually use Olay 7-in-one anti-aging foaming cleanser or one of the Neutrogena anti-aging ones. I'm scared of the super-duper-anti-wrinkle ones, though, that have all the SA in them and stuff because I don't know how my skin will react to it. I think my skin was better when I was on BCP but I haven't been able to take them for almost 5 years now (stupid hormones). *sad face*

I'm on Loestrin24, and the ONLY good thing I have to say about it, is that it took my periods from 5-7 days, to 1-3 days, and are much lighter. Other than that, sucks big time. Does not help with acne, does not help my mood changes, and worst of all, lebetro (spelling?), GONE.

So this is my post to say, STAY away! Oh another thing, it's fairy new, so no generic brands, and is relatively expensive, about $50 a month even on insurance.

I was on the NuvaRing for years, and loved every aspect aside from it made me ever more moody. Did great on acne. Still getting used to this pill thing, so I am yet again nervous to switch.

Who are you to judge the life I live? I know I'm not perfect and I don't live to be. But, before you start pointing fingers, make sure your hands are clean. -Bob Marley

• For those looking for a good cleanser, I can't recommend Clinique's foaming face wash enough. It's a tad bit expensive (compared to drug store stuff) but it lasts forever because you don't need to use that much. It works really well with my Clarisonic as well.

You can really feel that all of the soap is off after you rinse your face and my skin is literally squeeky clean afterwards. I noticed an improvement in my acne after just switching to this stuff.
