First Dance?

So because my fiancé and I are still both students and paying for our wedding on our own, we decided not to have a big formal reception. Instead we are having a dessert bar and cake in a room off the ceremony church and allowing the guests to mingle in the sanctuary. The problem I have is that I have dreamed since I was little of having my first dance with my new husband at my wedding. Would it be tacky to have it anyway just in the church? Especially since there won't be a dance for all the guests? I'm not talking about a big drawn out thing with lots of different songs, just my hubby and I for one. Any opinions will be appreciated.

    Do you mean "in the church" or in the fellowship hall?  If you mean in the church sanctuary, then I think it's not appropriate.  Is there a reason that you can't have an Ipod with speakers and a space  in the fellowship hall in case some guests do want to dance?  My cousin had a dessert reception, and dancing and it was fine.At any rate:  to answer your question, if your church allows dancing in the fellowship hall, then go ahead and do it.  If you're thinking of in the sanctuary, then I vote no.

    I guess you would call it a fellowship hall? The room where the dessert is pretty small but most of my family isn't that into dancing anyway. Another reason I didn't really want to spend alot of money on a big recepetion.

    Our friends did that and it worked out just fine.  They had a reception in a room off the church where we ate cake and some finger food.  They had background music playing but no dancing, except they did do a first dance.  I didn't see a problem with it then and I still don't.  The main thing to consider is whether the church will allow the plan you have in mind.

    It's YOUR wedding and if that's been one of your dreams then DO IT!! I would maybe (like others have said) have music playing on an ipod or something through out your reception! And have your first dance!!

    I'm not sure what the location is like exactly, but right after the ceremony before you to go have desserts and cake you could have everyone gather in the courtyard or lawn (or whatever your location has outside) and make like a circle and you two could have your dance there. Since you don't have many guests it would be intimate, and kind of special to have them all gather for your first dance. But I'm kinda sappy like that...
