Is giving a shower gift a must??

Let's be frank, here.  During the next 2 1/2 months, FI and I will be on a very tight personal budget due to paying large wedding bills.  I keep seeing talk of "shower hostess gift ideas" on the other boards-- do I really have to do this?  Wouldn't a nice thank-you card with a personal message be enough?  Ideally, I'd love to give these women gifts, but I simply won't be able to afford it.  If you hosted a shower for one of your friends, would you be put off if you only received a card??

    I would love a thank you card.  But I think I'm just simple like that.  You know your friends best.

    I think a simple card would do! After all, your friends probably know you will be on a budget with the wedding coming up! I would keep my eye out for something cheap or something creative...like a framed picture of the two of you or a 'girlfriends' Christmas ornament. I bought the paper products for my shower, so, I felt like I had done something to contribute, I just got my friend a card!

    Absolutely a thank card is "enough". I would love to get one- especially if you sent it by mail. I LOVE mail :)

    I think that a thank you card is absolutely perfect.  Honestly, I had never heard of anyone giving the hostess a shower gift until The Knot.  I don't think its necessary and I can def understand being on a really tight budget.

    I am only sending cards....before the wedding.  However, I am planning on having the hoestess of each shower and their significant other over for dinner after the wedding (all seperatly, not all on the same night!)  I think that this is an inexpensive way to say thank you that is much more personal than buying a gift!  plus, I will get to use all those awesome gifts off the registry :)
