Lasik - AW

I'm getting lasik surgery tomorrow after 5 years of research and saving! Has anyone on here had the surgery? Any tips? I'm so excited to not have to wear contacts after 10 years of dealing with them!

Re: Lasik - AW

  • My sister just had it done a few weeks ago, hers took awhile to heal and she didn't see 20/20 the next day.  Be prepared to build up to "perfect" vision if necessary.
  • I have ALWAYS wanted Lasik!  I've been wearing contacts/glasses for 15years!  My eyes keep changing over the years, and they recommend you wait till that has stopped.  Please let us know how it goes!
  • My uncle had it and it worked for him. My parents' neighbor also had it and apparently the improvement was not very much. My parents also have a friend who had to have it redone. I don't wear glasses or contacts, but the though of a laser in my eye, or any eye surgery, weebs me out like nothing else. ::shudder:: Good luck with yours, though.
  • My mom had it a few years ago, and is really happy with it overall, though she still does have a pair of glasses for reading. My eyesight is too bad to qualify for lasik, so it makes me sad.

  • The procedure itself is quick and relatively painless she said.  The only part that hurt a bit was when they put pressure on her eye down the tear ducts.  They don't do this to everyone though so you might luck out with that part!
  • FMIL had it last year and loves the results. She says that her eyes get really dry sometimes, so she always has drops with her.I want it, but my eyes are so bad, and my doctor recommended I wait until after I have kids. This means I am going to be waiting a long time.

  • My best friend had it done to get into the police academy. Unfortunately, while in the police academy, he took a few good knocks to the head and it seems that at least one eye has... come undone... or something like that.I think I'm stuck in glasses for life. I tried contacts once a million years ago (I was like, 12 and they were hard) and only got one in before I quit and wanted it out. And being the old stick in the mud that I am, Lasik is too new for me to participate. I mean, sure, no one's head has exploded... YET. I need these eyes for the rest of my life, I need more than just 15 or so years of data on it.

A friend of mine had it done a couple of years ago, and after she had it done she got so worried because her vision wasn't as improved as she thought it would be. After a week though it got much better. So don't be worried if your vision isn't "perfect" right away.
  • Luckily I don't have problems seeing up close, so I most likely won't need reading glasses, but the optometrist did say that this was a possible issue later on. The good thing is that the company has a lifetime warranty, so if anything goes wrong or my vision depletes, I can have it corrected for free. I am pretty nervous about having my eyes pried open and a laser pointed at them, but they do give you a sedative of sorts to calm your nerves haha. On a side note, my favorite part of the whole thing (besides seeing clearly, obviously) is the mandatory napping all day! lol.
  • ooo FI wants this. I think we are going to do it next year and do it with our flex spending accounts. Good luck, I'm sure everything will turn out great :)

  • I've had several friends do this.  If they give you the option to watch the person before you, DON'T DO IT!  And have something on hard to get rid of the sticky stuff from the patches you have to wear at night.  (Ice and rubbing alcohol are what worked for my best friend)

  • I mean, sure, no one's head has exploded... YET. I need these eyes for the rest of my life, I need more than just 15 or so years of data on it.This was my opinion when it first came out. I've read about eleventy billion articles on it, and luckily, no head explosions. If mine does though, I'll be sure to update here...somehow...
  • If they give you the option to watch the person before you, DON'T DO IT!I'm pretty sure if I saw it done, I would run away screaming. FI will be there with me, and I told him not to go in the operating room because his reactions would be enough to scare me to death.
  • Awesome!  I had it done in 1999, wow, ten years ago!  It was really the best thing I've ever done for myself - I hope you have great luck with it!

  • This could be too late for you, but if they give you a DVD you should watch it.  My sis was terrified of the procedure but she watched the DVD and felt much better about it.
  • I had it done 2.5 years ago and it seriously was worth EVERY PENNEY. I do miss glasses sometimes, though, but I wouldn't trade it to go back.
  • They had a DVD that I watched while my eyes were dilating, and it definitely answered a lot of questions and worries that are most common with Lasik. BUT I made the mistake of youtubing lasik...sigh.
  • Fi wants it something awful. We are probably doing it in the near future. Lucky me, my vision insurance actually helps pay for part of it. Good luck with yours, I have heard a lot of positive things about it!
  • I just had it done last year, and I love the results.  While they say not to expect perfect results, I did have 20/20 vision the next day.  Also, they did give me a sedative, but it wasn't until after the ceremony so that I could sleep.  The worst part was when they put the pressure on your eye.  You go blind for a sec, but they usually warn you about everything.  It didn't really hurt though, but it was just a little scary.Oh just make sure to sleep all through the night.  I never had any problems because my mom just gave me another sedative when I woke up that night (as we were instructed).  Also, we just grabbed something to eat (fast food), and I went straight to sleep.  My cousin on the other hand had it, and when he woke up in the night, he stayed up and watched tv.  I think it messed up his eyes for a little while.  Other than that I LOVE it and would definitely go through it again.
  • Lucky me, my vision insurance actually helps pay for part of it.Unfortunately, this didn't work out for me, but they had a 2 years, 0% interest payment plan, which comes out to about $130 a month. Less than my car insurance!
  • My mom had it done and they messed it up, her vision was worse.  They did it a second time to fix it and now her vision is awesome.

  • I had it done 8 years and ago and would do it again in a second! The worst part is having your eyes stuck open and seeing the thing come at you but I just tried to zone out. My Dr. actually told me how many seconds per eye it would take- it was like 23 and 26 each eye so I counted to myself to keep myself calm and it was over each time before I got to the number. The counting helped keep my brain from freaking out and realizing what was happening to me. I had some bruising on both eyes because when they put the thing on them to hold them open I rolled my eyes back- so just try to relax and not let that happen. The whites of my eyes turned a little red and then faded to a lovely yellow- but that went away with in a few days. The worst part for me was having to wear goggles to sleep for a month or so afterwards and the eye drops I had to put in for a few weeks- I could taste them as they dripped in my throat... it was kind of gross but if I ate something or chewed gum I was ok.They put numbing drops in your eyes to numb them and I asked the Dr. to do it twice- just to make sure it couldn't feel anything- but really is was the best thing I ever did and I still have perfect vison more than 8 years later!I was able to see immediately too- the Dr. had me read an eye chart about 20 mins after he was done and for the first time since I was like 8 I could see clearly!Just follow their orders for after care and relax while they are doing it and you should be fine! Good luck!
  • I had it and it was phenomenal!! I got it done Jan 08, 2 weeks before i was about to go on my first ever ski trip to Colorado.  i was really worried about the altitude and the whole 'dry eye' thing, but it wasn't even an issue.  just keep putting drops in to keep them wet and then one day you'll notice you don't need them as much.also...they can give you a valium to keep you calm (i brought one of my stuffed animals with me) and it lasted i think i whole 2 minutes. best advice for the napping part later...go home, put on the sweet goggles (don't you don't bump your eye in your sleep or anything) throw on your ipod and take a nap.  then wake up, grab something to eat and lay back in bed with the ipod on...it'll be one of the best days ever!!any my vision was barely cloudy that day and the day after, but i did it on a friday afternoon - you're going to love it, relax and enjoy!!
