Possibly a stupid question about car buying

if we are paying cash, do we actually need cash itself, or would a check work? I don't want to call the dealership and ask b/c that sounds like the dumbest question ever. TIA!

Checks are fine! I don't think anyone would feel comfortable walking around with 15 G's or more in their purse :)

No, you don't need actual paper money. You might need it to be a certified check. Cash just means that there's no financing. I think you can put the whole total into a credit card and it's considered a cash purchase. Anyway, for that high an amount, a certified check might be the best way to go.

Well I asked the dealership - and they said they would accept credit/debit for purchases up to $2000, and personal check for the difference. What the difference is between a paper personal check and my debit card are, is beyond me.

That's odd because typically people like to avoid personal checks, since there is always a chance that it will bounce.

Maybe the transaction fee is high to run a CC or debit purchase over 2K?GL!

We just bought a car last week and paid with a personal check and had no problems. You could not use a debit or credit card for any amount over $2,000.

There are money limits on debit cards.  We tried to put our reception on our debit card and that bank wouldn't let us use it for that big of a purchase.  That's probably why the dealerships limit the amount.
