Changing names

Hey ladies,What documents do you need to send to Social Security to get a new card?  I'm getting so confused.  Also do you recommend going in there or mailing it in?  I'm afraid the wait will be long if I go in on my lunch break. Thanks!

I would go in if you can, that way, they can accurately answer any other questions you may have. Plus, it will be faster than mailing it in.

I went in because I didn't want to hand over my only copy of the marriage certificate.  You only need the marriage certificate and the name change form (our county included the form with our certificate). If you call, you can make an appt.  I didn't, but I only waited 15 minutes.

You just need your certified marriage certificate, the SS form, and your current ID.  I went in because I didn't want to mail my only marriage certificate (without knowing when I would get it back).

I went to the Edina office and all I needed was the marriage certificate.  I purposely went before lunch (9:30 a.m. actually) and only had to wait 10 minutes.  My number got called, I told them my SSN, they took my marriage certificate to photocopy, and I was done!
