Unity Candle Outdoors?

Hi Ladies, I'm new to this board and just hoping for some opinions. FI and I would like to do a unity candle ceremony, and our ceremony will be outside. Our big concern is that it'll blow out or be difficult to light if the day gets windy at all. It's been suggested that we do a hurricane vase over the candle so that the flame would keep. Do you think this will work? Has anyone done this without any big issues? I actually would like to do a floating unity candle (like you see on the knot shop site) with an engraved glass vase so that we can keep and use it for flowers or something in our home. What are some other alternatives to the unity candle? I've heard of the sand ceremony, but are there any others? Thanks in advance! :)

Re: Unity Candle Outdoors?

  • one of my friends did the unity candle outdoors and it failed.  The problem was it wouldn't stay lit after one mother lit the smaller one and then the other one couldn't even get hers to light.  I'm doing the same floating candle for the reasons you gave.  What if you used the floating candle holder for the sand rather than the candle and you still use the vase later.
  • We did a palm ceremony (blessing of the hands). I've seen a rose ceremony done too - it was really nice.
  • I really like the rose ceremony, too. What if you did floating candles and kept the water low enough that the wind wouldn't hit the flame? I've also seen oil lamps made to look like unity candles, which may stay lit better than a regular candle, and will last forever.
  • Unity cocktail.  That's what we're doing.  Dead serious.
This is a neglected planning bio.
This is a belated married bio, with no reviews yet because I'm lazy.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • Thanks for the suggestions ladies. I sort of had my heart set on the floating candle because so many of our decorations involve them (I love them :)), but I'm thinking I may have to change it up. I love the hand ceremony too, so we may end up doing that, actually. I'm intrigued by the rose ceremony thing though, could anyone explain it to me? I've never heard of it. Oh, and the cocktail thing is so unique! I love it! :)
  • You could also do a sand ceremony, a hand fasting or a rose and vase ceremony. I can e-mail you more information on all three if you want. Our ceremony was outdoors so we did the sand ceremony. Since both our mothers really wanted to do something during the ceremony we had them perform the sand ceremony instead of my husband and I and it worked out great.
  • If you really have your heart set on the unity candle you could do a small floating candle in a vase and then put a hurricane cylinder over it to protect it from the wind.
  • We chose not to have any special ceremony during our outdoor wedding ceremony, but a unity candle can be done(with hurricane lamps).
