Re: seriously, let's talk about something

  • It is a show that my fiance and I will actually watch together. It is also a good show to watch to wind down the weekend on Sunday nights. He is upset that it is on hiatus too. I hope the guy gets cleared so we can see our shows again. It looks like he won't because he had a history of domestic abuse. I feel sorry for the victim and her family. I can understand why they won't show the rest of the shows.

  • I like the not separating part really well.  It is kind of my biblical "screw you" to FI's grandparents.  I'm just not sure if I should use it because we're inviting some gay friends and don't want to be offensive.

  • Mandy- do you think you can send your DH to my place to make me some lunch?  I have beans, veggies from the farmers market, and spices.  I suck at domestic life and grocery shopping but need to spice up my bean/veggie wrap that I have just about every day.
  • I really dislike that Bible verse and would never have it in my wedding. For a myriad of reasons.

  • I would but I haven't seen him since Monday.  So, I think I'll get him to make me lunch first.  We're going to a jeweler tonight though, so we get to get some time.  I am excited.  I like our time apart, but I love our time together even more :)

  • Night_Sprite - my officiant gave me a traditional religious ceremony that used that wording but not quite word for word.  We didn't have a religious ceremony so we didn't use it, but here's a way you can use it....it comes right before being pronounced husband and wife:  (here's hoping I don't screw up the font)We ask of God, Creator and Preserver of all mankind, giver of all spiritual grace, and author of eternal life to send His blessings upon you ___(Bride) ___ and ___ (Groom). May you live faithfully together, may you surely perform and keep the vows and covenant that you have made between you, whereof the rings exchanged are a token and a pledge. May you ever remain in perfect love, peace and joy together, and live according to His precepts through Jesus Christ our Lord.May God look mercifully upon you __(Bride) __ and __ (Groom) __ ; may you have eternal love, may you honor and cherish each other and live together in faithfulness and patience, in wisdom and godliness. May your home be a haven of blessings and peace. Those whom God hath joined together let no man put asunder.

  • There are so many traditional aspects of weddings that are offensive and/or outdated, but yet I still want the tradition. So, I'm at a point where I have to decide what I want more, and it's really frustrating me.

  • Night Sprite, I don't really think that is offensive.  The guests at your wedding will know its from the Bible, so if they are offended I don't think it would be with you?
  • current events: So excited about the winner of Top Chef Masters!! weekend plans: FI leaves tonight for his bachelor party so I'll be home alone for a day and a half.  I'm going to Iowa Sat and Sun. funny jokes: I've got nothing.

  • Nevertheless, I think purposefully using a person that could hurt some of our loved ones is not a good idea.

  • But at the beginning of creation God 'made them male and female.' For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united with his wife, and the two will become one flesh. So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together let man not separate.Well, I think it sounds ridiculous when they say he leaves his father and mother and joins his wife. Uhh...sure. He probably left mommy and daddy when he was 18 and I think it sounds juvenile in a wedding ceremony.I also don't like the word flesh. One flesh is worse because I think about sex. I don't want to think about the bride and groom having sex during their vows. Also, Yes. We are still two. He's one. I'm another. That equals 2. And then there's the gay marriage thing.

  • Actually, I think I have used this verse on FI. For instance:FI: I don't like the way you make mashed potatoes! My mom always leaves the skin on and she never puts milk in them!Me: For when a man marries, he must leave his father and mother and cleave to his wife, and they will become one flesh.Stupid twelve years of Catholic school.I kind of like the verse for this reason though: getting married means becoming a new family and a new social unit separate from anything that has gone before, and the bond between husband and wife becomes the most important.

Wouldn't it be nice to live together in the kind of world where we belong?
  • Not to mention the hermaphrodites Ficshe.  What was God thinking when he created them?
  • But I spose you could be one flesh for forever if you walk around your whole life with his peen in your hooha.

  • Don't even apologize, Fishy.  I had my own misgivings.  I asked for discussion.  I can still give them a big middle finger when I send them an announcement after the wedding is over and Dani's prayer/blessing thing can work just as well.

  • Sarah, if it were me, I would just say it like that then. Word for word. I mean, if that's how you interpret it, then why don't you just say what you want it to mean instead of leaving it all up in the air, ya know?

  • Well, I wouldn't use it anyway, because now that I am a hardcore atheist I'm not using anything that mentions God in my ceremony. I'm basically doing the same thing with a passage from Les Miserables, and now I generally only quote the Bible to tease FI.Just saying that the real meaning behind it is kinda cool.

  • I don't know about your pastor Amber, but ours is very good about breaking things down in her homily (or whatever it's called in churches that aren't Catholic - I'm still learning). Anyway, the readings are done, and then she sort of applies them to real life now. So, for that reading she would say something about two people joining in a family together, rather than "his family" and "her family."The two become one thing would probably be practical things like joint decisions, support in times of trouble, and a friend to celebrate in times of joy. I'm so not a fan of the Bible in it's literal form because it just doesn't apply to my life now. But, I can't for the life of me see why the real life applications of it wouldn't help me lead the kind of life that was described, for the time that it was written.

  • Oh fische you just made me laugh out loud with walking around together as one flesh...Anyway, Also, Yes. We are still two. He's one. I'm another. That equals 2.I agree, and that's why my absolute favorite part of our ceremony was this: Love one anotherbut don't make a bond of love let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls. Give each other to drink but not of the same cup Give each other of your bread but don't eat of the same loaf. Sing and dance together and be joyous but let each one of you be alone. For even as the strings of a lute are alone they quiver with the same music. And stand together, but not too near together, for the pillars of the temple stand apart and the oak tree and the cypress will not grow in each other's shadow. Let there be spaces in your togetherness and let the winds of the heavens dance between you.
