Re: seriously, let's talk about something

  • Yes I did: It doesn't have anything to do with anything, I was just curious since you have such strong beliefs. I was honestly just curious, not trying to start a fight or anything.

  • Sign me up as a founding member Bec.  I'd offer to be the shoe scholar, but I don't have your level of knowledge. So, I'll be the creative genius behind the menu...errr I mean I'll translate the bible to fit our needs.

  • Bec count me in! I'd rather have a big glass of red wine though...Dani, this is religion! You don't get your rathers! Are you serious?!? YOU MUST CONFORM! Just kidding. In my church you can drink whatever you want. It's the best church EVAR.
  • In my church you can drink whatever you want.I had a feeling that would be the case!

    Our Story MAJORLY UPDATED 8/6/09
Wouldn't it be nice to live together in the kind of world where we belong?
  • And I still want a martini. I'm pretty sure God is A-ok with that.Bec, this kinda proves my point from earlier.  What would make you believe that God is ok with that?  I am not saying he is not, because how should I know?  But I do know there are parts of the Bible that condemn drunkenness.  I think sometimes people just decide what they think is ok with God, without consulting his word.
  • Well, if this doesn't get me a blue ball, I don't know what will.

  • I'd like to recommend that the "Bible Translation" position become a committee role.  On my committee, I'd like Dani and Fishy. Um, Fishy is another founding member, right? And I think Mandy's husband has also offered to help.  Because it can't all be liquid libations...

  • Mandy, how do you manage to start these 3-pagers (going on 4 now)?  I'd be happy if I could get a 2-pager.  Thrilled, actually.
  • E, I'm not sure why you are getting worked up. This isn't a hostile discussion, and nobody is attacking each other. In a way, everyone is qualified to discuss religion, because religion is personal to each individual. I feel perfectly qualified to discuss how I feel about it.Precisely!

  • TLV, I didn't notice the comment being directed to me before.  E, I'm not sure why you are getting worked up. This isn't a hostile discussion, and nobody is attacking each other. In a way, everyone is qualified to discuss religion, because religion is personal to each individual. I feel perfectly qualified to discuss how I feel about it.  Why are you assuming that I am worked up, at all?  I am sitting here as cool as a cucumber.  Discussing how you feel about it and discussing fact is not the same, people are discussing both right now.  Sprite, as I said, Aramaic was widely used then and it seems obvious that you based your comments on Wikipedia, which is wrong.  It has already been proven via archeology, documentation, and found scrolls that Hebrew was the primary language among Jews at the time of the Second Temple.  You also need to understand that the western method of Wikipedia considers Aramaic a separate language when in fact, it is a Hebrew dialect.
  • Oh yeah, the C's are in!!  I shall braid everyone's hair.  Just kidding.  I can't braid hair.I actually can't take credit for this 3 pager... it was all amber_night girl.

  • Since I lived in Palestine, speak 3 languages, grew up in a house with parents of 2 differing religions, and studied 2 years of theology in college ,I know a lot about many religions.   I don't know if i'm qualified to join this discussion though.  Mrs E look upward.  tlv answered your question.
  • At Shabbat dinners, it is always open bar and you don't have to be Jewish to join for dinner.  Young Rabbis walk around with pitchers of mixed drinks and there are L'Chaims(like toasts but short) until the alcohol is done.
  • My point is, if you could not gather it from what I said, because most people are not qualified to have this discussion, the emotion and personal views on religion come to play. It never ends well and people walk away angry because they all feel right. I don't think people will walk away angry from this thread. No one is trying to convert anyone here, people are just stating their different views. I find it quite interesting, even if I do disagree with what some people have to say.
  • Laurenbeth, my entire argument is that I DON'T HAVE HIS WORD to go by. So you're right; I wouldn't know if he's OK with it. But my God, different from anyone else's God, is OK with it because it's not hurting anyone, and I'm not breaking any commandments. Not that I would even know that, since "Thou Shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife" could have originally been written "Thou Shalt not covet thy neighbor's wafer."
  • Wow.  I am way too lazy to read thie whole thing, but I would just like to say that OMG JESUS RULEZ 4-EVA!!1111And that I too like pizza.

  • lol Bec.I agree with you Nicole. I think this is a good discussion and everyone is being respectful and just sharing their views.

  • Okay, I only read to the middle of page 2, but I just wanted to say that when DH goes to religious weddings, he counts how many times they make references to having kids.  Because in some churches, it's all about having babies.

  • I don't even know what a wafer is! Or why I should covet it! I don't want my neighbor's wife's Cheez-it! Can I get into heaven now?
  • I love Bec.And I've got to say that in general, I think that the basic rules around religion are cool and the basic message is good, but in Christianity you get a lot of different interpretations so once it gets into the nitty gritty and specific rules, I tend to kinda tune it out.I try to live my life as well as I can and treat the people around me with respect and dignity.  Any supreme being is believed to be omniscient.  If he is, he knows what's in my head and my heart and knows not only what I did as well as why I did it.  He can judge me on that when the time comes, but I'm not a subscriber to a vengeful and wrathful God.

  • Bec, I think that is a little bit of a stretch, but I see your point.  However, I guess instead of saying well, this is not EXACTLY what God said in the first place so I am not going to read or follow any of the Bible, I chose to try to learn what I can and apply the parts that I think would help me lead a happier life.
  • I really can't take every word of the Bible literarlly. It has been translated and translated. In Latin the word anima means soul, spirit, and can sometimes also mean mind. These all have totally different connotations in English. Sprite- there is a really gorgeous quote about sexuality by either Socrates or Plato. It talks about the moon, earth, and sun being split. They then search for their other half. It touches on male-female, male-male, and female-female couples. It probably wouldn't work for your wedding, but it's a gorgeous passage. I'll have to see if I can find it again.

  • Bec, I think that is a little bit of a stretch*head-desk-face-palm-ass-floor* Just read wadings last post. It says what I mean without being facetious, which was obviously lost.
  • I'm late, but can I join the 'Church of Awesomeness'???Wait, does this mean that we can tithe to alcohol?  Suh-weet!

  • We don't tithe. Just contribute what you would like to drink today and we'll call it even. The Church of BYOB!
  • sucrets - My FI notices the same thing.  We've been to 3 weddings together already this year.  In the last one (a full Catholic mass), there were lots of references to having kids.  Fortunately the couple does want kids, but holy cow.  FI and I aren't having kids (I already have one, we don't want more), so that wouldn't fly for us.
  • Brilliant.  I'm in!
