Getting in Shape

OMG, OMG, the dress does NOT fit. 1month away. PLEASE HELP

Hi Ladies,Please, please help me out here.  I ordered my dress through a local bridal shop, and when I purchased it she told me it would be "a little snug" and suggested that I "lose a little" so that I would be comfortable on the big day.  With this information in hand I amped up my workouts, stopped eating out and focused on healthy nutirion -- I lost 11 pounds in 3 months and was feeling pretty great. Low and behold, the dress has come in and it does not fit! I cant zip it past mid-back, it is *at least* 2 sizes too small (even after the 11 lbs I lost!!!), and we all know wedding gowns don't stretch. Furthermore, it is NOT alterable.  It's cut on a bias, the color is strange, and it is fitted below the hips, I've had a seamstress look at it, there is no way to make it bigger and preserve the integrity of the dress. I don't have another cent to buy a new dress, I'm beyond broke from this wedding as it is. So here's the deal, I've gotta lose some big weight (like 15lbs at least) and quick.  I'm a smart girl. I understand metabolism and nutrition, I am 100% in favor of losing weight in a safe healthy, way, however, desperate times call for desperate measures. This is the last, last resort.  Anyone have any tips at all? For the last week and a half I've been running 3+ miles every morning, walking another 3 every evening and keeping the calories under 1000, and it's just not coming off fast enough (I've only lost 2.5 lbs!). I've got one month left. I'll do anything. Please help! Thanks!

  • First of all... running three miles a day and walking three in the evening means you should be eating WAYYYY more than 1000 calories a day!!!!!Basic body mechanics: when you don't eat the required amount of calories per day, your body enters starvation mode and stores MORE fat. Your body's job is to protect itself, and it will hold onto whatever fat/calories it can and store them up because it's preparing itself for long haul starvation survival.So... first... EAT MORE CALORIES! I wish I could make that bigger! I've never used them, but a lot of the ladies on here like the Daily Plate and Sparkpeople. Secondly, drink lots of water, cut out extra sodium towards the big day, and try to avoid processed foods and/or those with preservatives. Try to eat as "close to nature" as possible so your body gets the right nutrients. Lastly (no one on here supports this that I know of), but there are cleansing diets where you can lose 10 or so lbs in a couple weeks. You will gain it all back after the wedding, but it might get you in your dress.

  • Oh... and slap the bridal shop lady for ordering a dress that was too small to begin with and putting you through this in the first place : )

  • What a nightmare! I would absolutely be raising some cane to the bridal shop!!!!! I'm so sorry this has happened to you!! :(

  • Honestly, what you are doing now is very bad for your body.. like PP said.. you need more calories.. you arnt suppost to go under 1200.. and if your working out then you need more than that.. Your body can stop losing weight all together if you starve yourself liek that.. Honestly, workout.. eat lots of protein, fruits, veggies.. limit starches.. no alcohol, no sugars.. no extras.. Trying to lose 15lbs in 1 month is going to be very hard if not impossible... That is why I would be hesitant to order it even with her saying it would be snug or that you needed to lose a little..  I hope in the end that it does fit... just please dont starve yourself to do this..

  • Oh no!  That's like my worst nightmare!  I would agree that you are not eating nearly enough.  You have to fuel your body in order to exercise and for you body not to start cannabilizing your muscle for fuel instead of fat.  Have you ever done low carb or only eaten carbs around workouts?  I can't sustain that kind of eating and completely end up gaining the weight back, but I've lost lots of weight in a short period of time (obviously mostly water, but my clothes got looser).  I would suggest completely cutting out refined foods (sugars, white breads) and maybe even whole grains unless it's before a workout or right afterwards...same with fruit.  I do not advocate doing that long term.  In order to get the calories you need to function, you should up your protein and fats significantly (healthy fats obviously, like almonds, olive oil, etc).  Fat doesn't make you fat, if you are within the correct amount of calories your body will burn whatever you don't use.  You couldalso check out "cutting" diets that body builders use.  They seem to be able to preserve lean muscle tissue while "cutting" body fat pretty quickly by eating whole natural proteins, veggies, etc.  It's worth checking out.  Seriously, though, eat more.  Good luck!  I am so sorry about your wedding dress.

  • This is not healthy or something that I would recommend except in situations like this, but cutting out all carbs typically helps people drop big weight fast and might be worth a try.
  • Have you tried the miracle girdle. It sucks you in real tight and you appear to have lost about 10 lbs overnight. Then you wont have to do all these fad diets. I think its worth a try, they sell it at sears and theres a new one out by a new company. Now Ive tried it on and i cant say its the most comfortable thing, but it does the job. Good luck!
  • TWO SIZES small?!  They ordered you the wrong size then.  That's not a little snug, that's stupidly snug. Get them to find another dress for you.  Don't ruin your health for a stupid dress.
  • I am not in favor of this but you could try the Atkins diet. I know people who have done it and lost weight fast. My uncle is on it again and told me he lost 11 pounds in the past 2 weeks. I am sorry that this is happening. I hope everything works out. Keep us updated.
  • I honestly can't believe so many of you are actually trying to help her lose weight that is not only unhealthy, but silly.  There is no way she's going to be able to lose that weight and keep it off in the meantime.  How about the most responsible thing to do here is, get a different dress, asap.I know you all said you don't "normally" advocate this kind of thing, but seriously now.  If you wouldn't normally, you shouldn't now.
  • Definatley get a different dress, and pitch a monster fit. It's not YOUR fault the dress doesn't fit!

Ditto amoro. I would check your receipt for your measurements and what size was ordered for you and compare to the dress to be certain. Then raise holy hell to get them to fix this.
  • Oh man that sucks! The same thing happened to me but they were able to let mine out a little. If there is no way they will let you change the dress then its time to take it to the next level. Now I know, I know  that people tend to get all offended about this kind of stuff. But seriously a little bit of crash dieting isn't gonna kill you as long as you go back to being healthy right after the wedding. So don't listen to the people telling you that you need to eat more. That is all well and good and true if you are trying to lose weight at the typical rate of 1 -2 pounds week. But to get that dress to fit you are gonna need to get a little crazy ahah. First of all what are we working with? How tall and what is your weight now? Let me say I HAVE lost that much weight that fast. It can be done. No it is not the healthiest thing to do and Yes you will gain it back when you go back to normal eating. But if you are ok with that then here we go!First of all keep up the running and walking. Running is THE best way to lose weight. Second you are gonna need to drink A TON of water. Have that water bottle in your hand at ALL times. You can get rid of a lot of water weight that can make a difference. SO very very low sodium and NO added salt. Now for eating this is the hard part. But I swear if you do this you will lose. It is what a lot of body builders do right before a show when they are trying to drop weight fast. You need to cut out ALL carbs. ALL of them! Eat ONLY these things: lean chicken breast, more lean chicken breast, green salad ( only a tiny tiny bit of dressing if you must) a piece of fruit in the morning. And a non-fat yogurt for a snack when you must. Keep the calories very very low. I'm talking 700. Oh and do cardio wear a hoodie and a sweater to get rid of more water weight and hit the sauna if possible.I know this is very very extreme and is not recommended for everyone. DOn't even attempt it if you have any kind of health issues. It takes a LOT of motivation but believe me it will work. Like you said you are a big girl you can take advice if it suits you.
  • Oh and PS spanx can help a little too....Also have you checked into getting them to make it into a corset back? Sometimes they can do this and you will have a little more room...
  • Novodca, are you kidding me?!  Are you a doctor that you know what her health status is?  What if she has an unknown heart condition and she kills herself trying to fit into a stupid dress?  Does anyone else think this is insane?!
  • *raises hand*If it was me... I'd pitch my tent outside their door and throw a sh*t fit until they made it right.

    *blink* ummmm...
  • Dude, Nebb, sorry.  I missed your response before I posted that.  I get a wedding is important and special, but damn.  Don't go out of your mind over it!
  • Amoro thats why I said not to do it if she has any health issues... obviously its not the healthiest thing to do. But people survive diets like this all the time....She asked for advice on how to lose the weight.. I gave it. Its up to her to decide if she wants to take it. If she is gonna do some crazy diet she might as well do one that works. Also I do agree that she should first try to get them to change the dress. That is obviously the best option here...

Harming your body for the sake of the dress is a really really ridiculous idea, and eating 700cal consistently AND working out is going to harm your body if not your mental state as well.
  • if I were you, I'd rent a dress, at least as a backup.
  • So, giving her advice on what she specifically asked about is the only way to handle this?  Clearly, it's unhealthy and irresponsible.  And sure, don't do it if you have health problems, but like I said... what if she doesn't *know* she has a health problem? Furthermore, I get that this is the "getting in shape" board, but it all has to be done responsibly.  Just because she didn't ask what to do about getting a new dress doesn't mean that isn't the best option here.  Think a little!
  • And I repeat for a third time : Obviously getting another dress is the best option
  • ... not to mention the fact that the 700-cal diet is going to make her look like death popped in the microwave on her big day. (as well as make her dizzy, nauseous, miserable, etc)

  • Not meaning to piss everyone off here.. really. I really don't think that calorie restriction for a short time is all that bad....Jillian Micheals book making the cut has a very similar diet plan at the end of it meant to be used right before a wedding.

mmmm microwaved death, that sounds like a nice lo-cal snack!
  • If it's the best option, don't say, "Well, getting a different dress is the best but you can try this and it won't kill you...."What do you think she's going to focus on?Dear OP-Please do not do this to yourself for one day.  Go back to the bridal shop and get them to fix this as it was clearly their mistake.  You cannot lose weight this fast and not do damage to your body.  You will feel sick, miserable and not be able to enjoy yourself at all. There are other ways.  Please look into them for yourself and your health.
  • Hey everyone, looks like I've sparked quite the heated debate here.  First, thanks for all the tips support ladies, I know it's just a wedding, and I'm lucky to even be saying something like this, but this is the most stressful time I've ever encountered in my entire life, so thank you for all the support. Novodca, I'm sorry that you're taking all the heat for giving me exactly what I wanted: tips for losing the weight fast.   I 100% accept and aknowledge the health risks associated this type of extreme dieting and exercising.  I know that doing something like this will have an effect on my metabolism and overall health. However, considering the time frame, this is not a long term life decision, it's 30 days of my life and if I didn't think I could handle it I wouldn't have asked, I'm young and healthy, and I am making sure that I'm consuming the appropriate ammounts of necessary vitamins and minerals.  Yes, 15 lbs in one month seems pretty extreme, but when you consider that women on plans like Weight Watchers or Jenny Craig tend to lose around 2 to 3 lbs a week it isn't that bad. Furthermore, although many consider Jillian Michaels a fitness goddess, anyone who's ever watched The Biggest Loser can see that the encourages people to lose massive amounts in a completely unresonable time-frame (I don't care how big you are, 100 LBS in less than 6 months is darn crazy), of course it's unhealthy, but people do it, and they survive. If a friend of mine approached me asking the exact same question, I would have said forget it, get a new dress. I see the logic there. But I guess it's just different when you're the one trying to fit into the dress.  There's money, ego, and sheer stubborness mixed into the equation, I want to wear that dress, my dress. How I ever became one of those women, I don't know, but weddings will do that to you I guess. But you know,  if worse comes to worst, I'll take out a credit card and head to David's the week before the wedding and pick something off the rack. I'll then spend my entire wedding feeling jilted and and self-consious in a dress that I don't love, but whatever. A marriage doesn't start with a dress anyway, it starts with love. So, thanks again ladies.  It's nice to know you're all so concerned for my well-being. I know for sure I'm gonna keep running, and if anything, I'll have some nicely toned legs for the honeymoon ;).

  • laladypoet - You can rent a wedding dress?  I have never heard of this.  I dont want to but I am curious.  I guess you can rent anything today.  Do you know anyone who did this?Jamjapoarm-I agree with the other posts.  Go back to the bridal shop and raise hell.  Throw in some organizations you are going to report them to.  It sounds like  your dress was ordered in the wrong size.  They might be able to rush order a new one at their expense.

WTF is up with all the BAD ideas!! Colonics can be very unhealthy, they ruin the balance of GOOD bacteria in your colonic system and you can get serious infections. Who doesnt wanta  serious infection in their digestive system right before their wedding!
