Which WHERE in God's name is she getting married that its costing that much? I mean I know the NJ/NY area can get pricey, but dear LORD that is a lot per plate!

E, that's awesome! I'm picturing a bathroom full of people madly writing cheques and comparing notes. Whit, I just had an update to IE and my italics went away. I can't even "ctrl + i" to make it italicized. I can do it on my work computer still but I'm at home now. I don't see a broken piece of paper.. How was your shower, BTW?
I'm from MI and we also go on the rule of "covering one's plate" but $250 pp is ridiculous (at least for ANYWHERE around here - even the "rich" areas)! I think you should give what you are comfortable with - for my brother's wedding we only gave $200, but I had also spent $350 on the bachelorette party the week before and $100 on a shower gift before that! I think it really comes down to your relationship with the couple. Even if you can't afford a gift, they should be happy you could make it - I know we will be for some of our friends. In the end, you need to give what feels right, not because it is "per plate" but because it is a wish of your happiness for the couple and it won't send you to the poor house! Have a great time, and I hope this helps!
Haha, it kinda looks like this:Shower was great, had a lot of fun, got a lot of great stuff! I'm wedding excited now!!
Hey, if you're willing to take a trip up, it'd be awesome! I still need to buy my plane ticket home, but I'm off for 2 weeks around xmas and new years.

I'll see if I can swing it. I haven't been to NYC in years. I keep trying to talk FI into going for the weekend (or even just a day), but he's not a city person.Perhaps I can sway him with special favors? Anything for shoes and a trip to the city, right?
I don't think you need to absolutely cover the cost per head. i think that's a pretty general phrase everywhere and usually around $100-200 is a pretty generous gift. i've never been to a wedding where they gave $500 for a gift unless it's a grandparent or parent but i'm not from the east coast.
