New York-New York City

Changing your name / insurance / etc

Hi all,I've read a lot of conflicting information about changing one's name in New York, and I'm wondering if someone can help me iron it all out! We're getting married in Rhode Island, and we plan to get a marriage license in my new (changed) name. As I understand it, I will then need to1) Get a SS card in my new name, using the marriage certificate as proof2) Get a license in my new nameIs that accurate? Do I need to do anything else? And could I encounter any problems given that I'm not getting married in New York? Finally, one last question: my fiancé is going to be putting me on his health insurance (I'm self-employed), which will become effective the day we marry. But my name change won't be official then, so should he have my new name or my old name on the insurance? If the old name, will we then have to change it again once my name is officially changed? Thanks for any help you can provide!Cheers,Melinda

Sorry, by getting "a license in my new name" I mean a driver's license.

You are correct.  First and foremost you change your social security card.  But this can only be done when you get the license - with your new name - sent back to you.  It takes a couple of weeks (I know this because FMIL just did all these things when she remarried).  After that, you can change everything else, driver's license, passport, etc. etc.As far as the insurance, ask for its policy.  If they need something in writing with your new name, then have your husband add you with your current name and change it later (which will require new cards to be issued).  Otherwise, no problem. As far as making sure everything is okay; if you had to worry about getting married out of state, then folks wouldn't have destination weddings.  As long as your license is legitimate, it will serve as proof that you are married - period.GL.
