Who's had wisdom teeth removed?

DH has an appointment in January to get his wisdom teeth taken out.  I've never had it done, so how long does the pain last?  What types of foods did you eat during that time?  I know it's still early, but I'm trying to plan ahead.  I've thought of mashed potatos and any type of pureed soup.  Frozen or regular yogurt or smoothies.  What else?  And could you not chew at all, or could you handle something fairly soft?

Thanks!

I think it depends on whether or not his are impacted or not.  All 4 of mine were, the pain isn't unbearable.  I was laid up for a couple of days.

I enjoyed peanut butter milkshakes for a few days.  Mostly soft foods, soup.  You have to be careful that food doesn't get stuck in the cavities of his mouth.

It's been quite a while but I think I just ate non-chewing stuff like soup the first day.  After that, I probably took it easy for a little while.

Though I'm a pro at mouth surgeries and tend to over do it.  I once ate a strawberry with my jaw wired shut!  My mom wanted to kill me.

How many is he having removed?

I had all 4 removed at once when I was in college.

There was no real pain for me, but I have a fairly high threshold. Anyhow, the dentist said only soft foods, and nothing with a straw (because the suction can pop your stiches out) for a few days. I DID get severe brusing across both cheeks - I went to class the next day looking like a battered woman. Klassy

C - I'm pretty sure they're taking them all out.  His are pretty bad - one is actually turned around 90 degrees, so it's perpendicular to his other teeth.

It's been a long time since he's been at the dentist, and they've been hurting him for a while.  He really procrastinated on this one.  Plus the dentist said they usually don't remove them when someone gets to be his age, but his dentist sent him to a specialist and they said they definitely have to be removed.

So pretty much I should plan on at least 2-3 days of basically non-chewable foods?

I only had one wisdom tooth and had it removed when I was 18. I had it removed on a Friday morning then slept that whole day. The next day I ate soft foods all day (soup, jello). I remember going out with friends Saturday night and not being in any pain. By Sunday I was eating pizza, but only chewing with my front teeth. You just have to avoid getting food stuck in the back because it can lead to an infection. Its really not bad though, and they will give him plenty of pain meds. I had no swelling, but I know many people do.

I had three removed when I was 19 (getting the 4th removed sometime in 2010). The pain was tolerable.  They dentist gave me a script for vicodin - never took it, Tylenol worked best for me.  I ate soft foods for the first few days - lots of popsicle.  Mine weren't impacted either, that makes a huge difference.  My sister had her's out and was in terrible pain and couldn't eat solid foods for a few weeks - cheeks were swollen, she was a mess!  I also remember having trouble eating foods that were really hot like soup.

I've had mine out (3 impacted--the 4th wasn't there!) and was laid up for aout 3 or 4 days.  The pain wasn't crazy bad (thanks vicoden!).  I had soup, jello and yogurt mostly.

I had mine removed year before last, I'd say the worst part wasn't the pain the few days after but just the act of having them removed since all I got was the novocaine.

I stuck to a lot of soups and pudding was a fav too. But that was only for a little while.

I had mine out when I was 24, and it was sooo much easier than I expected! I was eating grilled cheese by day 2! I had no bruising, and not a lot of pain. I never used the painkillers they gave me, just tylenol.

I would suggest pudding, jello, cream of wheat/oatmeal, smoothies (no straw), soup, etc.

Best of luck to your DH - if he has a good oral surgeon, he should have a smooth recovery. At least I think that is why my recovery went so well!

Yes, and you can tell that years later, I'm still far more concerned about the vanity part that the pain. Oh, and the dentist gave me a script for vicodin when I got the wisdom teeth out, but I stay away from that (knocks me out) and a couple motrin worked just fine.

Thanks ladies!  He said they are going to put him completely out for the surgery.  Which he is happy with. I have a feeling his may be a bit of a rougher recovery due to how bad his wisdom teeth are.

I was 'put under' when I got my 4 wisdom teeth out. I remember getting sick to my stomach from the anesthesia the first day, so maybe be prepared for that and have some ginger ale and chiclen broth ready. Aside from that, I ate puddings and all of that for a few days and then was fine.

I had all 4 of mine out a couple of years ago- all were impacted. It was painful, but bearable (I am a wuss when it comes to pain though). I'd say I was eating soft foods for at least a week though. I gradually ate harder foods, but had to bit with my front teeth. I guess it really is different for everyone.

I was put completely under for mine, too. I am extremely afraid of needles so they gave me medicine to take before I went in, and I don't even remember them putting the IV in! My appointment was at 8 AM and I didn't wake up until 3 PM :p My dad claims I walked out of the surgeon's office, but I don't remember a thing!

I was like Queen P with my reaction to being totally out. I fainted/threw up for a few days - Mom once found me trying to get ice cubes from the toliet - lol.  I also got dry socket - that sucked the big one, required special mouthwash etc.  All of mine were impacted and I basically ate soup for a week.  DF on the other hand was eating tacos same day.

I ended up getting dry socket as well, that sucked pretty hardcore.
You can use clove oil to help treatthe pain of that. But here's hoping that he doesn't have to deal with it at all.

I had four removed when I was 17. I also developed a dry socket, which ended up being a worse experience than having the teeth removed. Ugh.

And instead of using the small ice packs we had, my mom used bags of frozen peas. Sounds odd, but I thought she was a genius. ;)

All 4 of mine were inpacted as well.  They had to knock me out to take them.  I was in bed for 2 days and didn't really want to eat.  I think I had some ice cream and fruit smoothies for a couple days-but I bet by day 5 I was eating again.  It hurts-I had a headache more then anything else-but as others have said, it's bearable and they give you pain meds.

I had mine out in high school.  I only took 1/2 a pain pill at a time and I was never in any pain.  I know you're not able to use straws (or smoke), or any other sucking action lol b/c you could get a dry socket.  They told me no icecream b/c frozen stuff is bad for you Cry
I remember I ate a lot of scrambled eggs/omlets the first day or two and then I was pretty much back to normal.

I had all four removed when I was 24. I was put under, they were impacted but didn't get sick or have dry sockets. I couldn't eat real, honest-to-goodness foods (sandwiches, chicken, etc.) for almost a week. Refried beans were a favorite of mine...used to eat them when I had my braces tightened, then had them again a bunch when the wisdom teeth came out nearly 10 years later. lol (Luckily, no food aversions!)

I ate lots of pudding, jello, Ensure, mashed potatoes, etc.

    Good luck to J!

I had all four removed in high school.  They were impacted and same as D, I had to be put under.  My experience was a little different though.  I didn't have dry socket and didn't get sick.  I didn't take any of the pain relievers that they prescribed and only took Motrin as needed.  I was eating mashed potatoes and scrambled eggs the same evening as the surgery (it was in the morning).  I don't remember it being any big deal.  I even had an overnight college interview at GCC two days after the surgery.

I think everyone is a little different though.  My BIL had two of his removed two weeks before Thanksgiving and was barely on solid food for Thanksgiving dinner (although, he is a bit of a baby when it comes to being sick or injured).

    Good Luck to your DH!

I had all four removed and they were imipacted.  I was eating everything the dentist told me not to, though.  I had chicken, cake, prok chops, etc all within the first two days.

DH on the other hand was a huge baby and was eating apple sauce, mashed potatoes, etc for about two weeks.
