no concept of time! (long...)

So FI and I are at odds about the day of timeline.  We are getting married at a ski resort and our photographer, who loves the resort, offered to shoot pictures of us snowboarding together on the morning of the wedding for free.  We're not doing e-pics so we both thought this would be kinda awesome, plus we're big snowboarders (hence the wedding at the resort).  I'm only planning on doing 1-2 runs first thing in the morning, being done by about 10-10:30 then heading straight to shower and get ready.  Our ceremony starts at 4:30pm and we're getting ready a half-hour away so I figure this won't be any problem for me.Problem is FI.  He needs to not only shower and get ready, but has taken it upon himself (with some family help) to set up the all the ceremony and reception decorations.  He thinks it's silly to pay to have someone do it when he, the groomsmen and a few other helpers can "get it done in no time."  I'm thinking this is crazy.  We're also taking pictures of his family & WP and my family & WP (separate so we don't see each other) before the ceremony too, to leave us more time later.  So my question is this: is he crazy?  Do you think he'll have time for this?  Maybe I'm thinking things will take longer than they will?  I figured on taking his family pics by 3:30 at the latest and mine at 4:00 at the latest.  Does that sound reasonable?  Or is that even cutting it too close?  Oh and btw, he thinks he'll be able to keep snowboarding for a few more runs after I leave because it doesn't take him as long to get ready. ??????

  • I think you are both crazy for wanting to snowboard the morning of your wedding.  I'm just not that risky.
  • How extensive are the decorations?  If it's just plunking some centerpieces on the tables, I'd be fine, but if it's more detailed stuff I'd leave it to the pros.

  • Is there a room for you to get ready at the resort?  It seems like driving an hour out of your way to get some pics could make things stressful.

  • I think it depends on how much decorating is to be done and how much help he'll have and how quickly they work.  Will they have decision to make or will it be already decided where everything will go?  Is it him and a couple people or him and a lot of people?  Is he planning to decorate while dressed for the ceremony or drive to the ceremony site to decorate, drive back to get ready and then drive back to the site for the ceremony?  I guess it's possible, but you'd have to figure it all out.

  • Personally, the last thing I would be doing on my wedding day is anything physical that could result in a surprise injury.  I would NOT be snowboarding the morning of my wedding.  The change of one of you falling and getting hurt, even twisting an ankle and having a swollen ankle or foot and not being able to fit into a shoe or something is too much of a risk in my opinion.  Him decorating, yeah no problem, but snowboarding, no way.

  • yes, i think he is crazy.  i wouldnt trust my husband to set up decorations, regardless of time constraints.  also, having family pictures start at 3:30 if your wedding starts at 4:30 is not enough time.  my FI and i saw each other before the wedding, so we took all our pics beforehand, and spent 3 hours doing so.  if i were you, i would leave the decorating to a professional, or at least someone not involved in pre-wedding pictures.
  • Always, ALWAYS assume that things on your wedding day will take longer than you think they will, because things always go wrong.  I don't think I've been to, seen, or heard about a wedding that ran exactly on schedule. But I agree, I'm not sure I'd take the risk of doing something dangerous on our wedding day.  Our photographer really wants to get pictures of us at the Neon Boneyard in Vegas, but because of time constraints and because it's pretty much a construction site, we're planning that photo shoot for the day after the wedding.  Perhaps that's an option for you?  Then you'd still get your awesome snowboarding pictures, but you don't risk not being able to walk down the aisle.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • I think it is silly to go snow bording together the morning of but not do pictures together 1. what time snowboard 2. when are your hair appoinments Honestly I would be worried about one of you breaking a leg and ending up in the ER instead of teh chapel
  • Oh, and as far as decorating, we're decorating our space before the reception, but I'm leaving that task up to the significant others of two of the groomsmen.  They'll be there and they're more than willing to help, but we're not going to need to borrow them for any pictures.  There's no way I'd have FI try and decorate, he has other stuff to do.

  • Decorating sounds completely resonable, but you need to put some thought into the logistics before the day of. I do think it's a bit insane to want to snowboard the morning of the wedding.  If My H and I had done that, with my luck, I would have fallen and broken an arm or something.  It's not a risk I'd want to take. Also, like PPs have said, build some cushion time into your day.  You never know when something will run over schedule.  Don't try to pack too much into the day of plans.

And betrothed, I'm disgusted with most of the comments that you have posted. I don't think I've ever read such judgmental comments in my life. I'm so lucky that the girls I speak to on theknot are nothing like you...I would've never come on here for ADVICE if I would've encountered a big a bitch as you. I genuinely feel awful for your children or your future children, and I think it would be irresponsible of YOU not to invest in their future therapy sessions starting now. • we actually haven't figured out all the ceremony stuff yet, but as far as the reception the centerpieces are eiffle tower vases with hydrangea on top in a lily bowl with floating candles.  all he needs to do for the CPs is put the vase in the bowl and pour some water around, everything else will be pre-set.  then he need to place favors. yeah, i was really concerned about the snowboarding day of too, which is why i was only going to do 1-2 runs to minimize risk. another reason why i don't want him going after i leave.  basically we both really like the idea but it would only be free if we can do it that morning so i'm sucking it up and crossing my fingers.so for a 4:30pm wedding what time would you suggest starting the family pics?  we'll do the ones with us and everyone afterwards, i don't mind him seeing me in snowboarding gear but i want my dress and stuff to be a surprise.

  • We did about 2 hours of pics before the ceremony (all of the pics that didn't require both H and I to be in them), and then did about 45 minutes between the ceremony and reception. Talk to your photographer and see what they suggest, but I would think 3-4 hours would be a good plan for pics.

  • In the case that you reaaally want to go snowboarding can you move it up to 9:30 or so?  I think they would make some cool pictures but I'd be more concerned with breaking a limb vs being late to decorate.
  • I think the snowboarding thing could be cool for an engagement shoot but doing it separately and on the wedding day just seems a little too much.  But also I see your FI's point that it takes guys 1/10th of the time to get ready as it does the girls.

  • Yeah... DH and GMs were supposed to help set up for the ceremony and reception.  They ran SUPER late to the point where it almost didn't get done.

  • notquiteblushing, fair is fair!  total guilty pleasure flick doing it a different day just isn't possible, and unfortunately the snowboarding pics were a big part of the reason we picked the photographer, so i think we just need to only do a couple runs at the most and be very careful as far as the rest of the stuff goes, i'll sit down with FI and write up a list of all the things he says he's going to do and next to it show him how many hours he has.  if he won't budge, i'll just have to round up some SILs and cousins to help him and the boys.  might be able to convince BMs SOs too since they'll have nothing to do.  i just feel bad putting guests to work.

  • If it helps, I'm paying for the girls who are setting up the room for me to get their hair done.  I think it's a nice way of saying thank you for the work they're doing for me, and it lets them get pampered a bit and not have to worry as much about getting ready.  Perhaps you could do a thank you gift for the people who are helping you set up the decorations.

  • Whatever you do, please do not have the significant others of the wedding party help "since they will have nothing to do." That is rude.
  • sorry that did sound rude, it's only one SO and I figured he'd want to hang out with the other guys instead of by himself, but obviously he doesn't have to do anything he doesn't want to.  maybe he wants to go snowboarding ;-)

  • I think snowboarding the day of the wedding sounds like a really fun and relaxing thing to do. I'm a skiier and FI is a snowboarder. We actually got engaged on a mountain so I'm all for being on the slopes the day of the wedding.  I also assume you both know your way around the mountain so the likelyhood of falling is probably slim. At least from my experience I only fall when I do stupid stuff. Now I wish my wedding was in the winter so I can do something like this.
