Two cake tastings..One night!

I went for 2 cake tastings tonight and they were amazing.  We went to Maribelle first and Bonbonerie second.  I think we are going to end up with Maribelle though.

We were at Bonbonerie tonight! What time were you there? Our tasting was at 5 and another couple came in right after us. I have only been to Bonbonerie and Marilyn's Cakes (I wanted to see cakes at two totally different price points) and it was no question after leaving Bonbonerie. I am sold! I have heard Maribelle is excellent though!

Ours was at 6pm, so it was probably us.  You definitely need to go to Maribelle.  Not that Bonbonerie is bad but at Maribelle they have like 20 cake models in the room where you taste at.  Our problem is our guest list is at 400 and Bonbonerie's cakes serve a max. of 250 so we would have to order kitchen cakes to go along with our wedding cake.  I just felt Maribelle was more personalized.  If you have any questions about maribelle you can email me at breffitt@fuse.net.  Also were you wearing a pinkish/orangish dress tonight?  If so we seen you in the parking lot when we started our tasting.

Yep, that was me! We were standing around discussing the tasting with my FMIL.

We went with Maribelle and I would definitely recommend them.  While I like Bonbonerie's cookies, I didn't want a cake that had been frozen; and Maribelle NEVER freezes their cakes. If you're still choosing flavors, btw, I would HIGHLY recommend the orange butter with strawberry cream cheese filling - our guests RAVED about that one (and I have to admit it was my favorite as well - Yum!).

Bonbonerie told us that they do not freeze their cakes. Were you told otherwise?

Maybe they've changed their policies, but I have heard from vendors in the wedding industry that they do.For example, I know someone who actually works wedding events, and they went to cut into one of their cakes to serve it to guests, and the center was frozen solid.

Well thank you for the heads up! I used to work in Cincinnati in special events so I will check with some of my old coworkers who do weddings and see if they have any more information.

NP.Like I said, I didn't use them, that's just what I've been told.  And maybe they've since changed their policies, so if you really, really liked them, go for it.  I'd still recommend Maribelle, though, just because it was sooooooooo good.  :)

hate to piggy back on your post... but did you feel like Maribelle's cakes tasted like cinnamon??  I tasted the dark chocolate with the raspberry preserve and the white chocolated with the opera cream and I swear I thought I tasted a hint of cinnamon on both.  I wouldn't normally say anything but I absolutely HATE cinnamon, more than anything else in the world and while I loved everything about Maribelle and am still leaning towards booking there... would it be totally rude of me to ask them to change their recipe???

I didn't taste the Cinnamon. Les8419 I think you should definitely go and try Maribelle.  Maybe you will like Bonbonerie better but I was opposite.  And also like hrparker said the Strawberry center one at Maribelle is amazing.  That will be in two of our layers of cake.  It was both my favorite and my fiances.

DF's sister was married in June and used Maribelle's, and I have to say for the price I was totally unimpressed with the cake.  I didn't even want seconds, which is so unlike me  :)  The chocolate cake was good (I tasted cinnamon, too), but I didn't like the icing at all--way too much shortening (it made the roof of my mouth all greasy).  DF took one bite and turned to me and said, "good thing we're not using them!"  We're lucky, though, I have a good friend in Indianapolis that has a wedding cake business and she's doing ours as a gift. Two of my co-workers used Bonbonerie and were very pleased.

My family has used BonBonerie many times over the past 4 years for cakes and they have never been frozen.  They were all made fresh and they were absolutely delicious!  I don't think that they do that based on my personal experience w/ purchasing from them multiple times previously.

I didn't taste any Cinammon in Maribelle's cake, though to be entirely honest, we weren't thrilled with their chocolate cake; we only got one layer in chocolate to please H and FIL (who promptly discovered that they liked the orange butter cake better ;)).  Our guests really liked the white chocolate cake w/ mocha and raspberry filling, and LOVED the orange butter with strawberry cream cheese. In re: the icing - I actually love their icing.  When we were tasting, it was honestly the first icing that wasn't sickly sweet.  Even FIL (who seriously has the biggest sweet tooth of anyone I've met) picked their icing over another cake that we'd brought back for him to taste.  He started iwth the other company, but once he tasted the Maribelle cake, he told us to throw away the other cake - coming from him, that's a huge deal. And that reminds me, Maribelle is SERIOUS about the freshness of their cakes.  When I was tasting, FI couldn't come back to Ohio with me b/c of work, so I went with FMIL.  We tried to get Maribelle to give us a couple of slices that I could take back with me to NYC the next evening so that H could try them, but they refused.  They didn't want H to taste frozen or two day old cake - they wanted him to taste was the cake would really be like.  They told us to stop by the next time he was in town and they'd give him whatever he wanted, but that they wanted him to taste their cake the way they meant it to be, not the way it would taste 36 hours later.

Oh, I understand about not wanting sickenly sweet frosting, but I do a lot of baking, and IMO there needs to be a good balance between butter and shortening in icing, and with DF's sister's cake, it missed the mark.  You need the shortening so the icing will hold, but there should be enough butter to deliver a good flavor, and DF's sister's cake didn't have that.  I was disappointed because I'd heard so many good comments on Maribelle.  DF's sister had originally gone with The Cakery, but they closed up shop (I've heard their cakes were very good). However, it seems like Maribelle's has a lot of options in flavors for icings as well as cakes, so maybe it was just whatever we had that didn't appeal to me and the others are very good.

That might be.If Bonbonnerie has changed their policies, I'd check with them; like I said, I do like their other bakery products.  But I'd also definitely give Maribelle another shot.  Again, we weren't thrilled with the chocolate flavor we had (it was some special flavor, not just plain chocolate, and I'm not remebering the name right now...), but we were more than thrilled with the other two flavors. If you're looking for a couple less expensive options, I have reviews of cake places in my blog.  We probably would have went with Tres Belle if we hadn't decided to visit Maribelle.

Maribelle's chocolate cake does have cinnamon in it. My mom asked during our tasting and they said it was true. I actually liked that. I normally don't go for cinnamon but I love it in combination with chocolate. But I did not like their icing. I don't really like any icing ever, except for BonBonerie's. It has white chocolate in it and it tastes totally different than any other icing I've had. We were also told at BonBonerie that they don't freeze their cakes. Hopefully that'll turn out to be true. (We booked them.) I don't know if you can ask Maribelle not to put in the cinnamon. Logic dictates that it should not be a problem but I always worry about vendors being very sensitive and getting offended at being asked to do something differently. But it's your wedding, if you don't like cinnamon, why should you have to have it? You're paying, you're the boss.

Good luck choosing! We tried both of those bakeries and honestly I wasn't as impressed as I thought I'd be (especially with the Bonbonerie).  We went to like 8 or 9 different bakeries, too.We ended up going with a different baker in Centerville surprisingly enough because I though that the cake actually 'tasted' better and the price was unbeatable.

I know this wasn't the original intention of this post but I just want to say to thank you to everyone who posted about tasting the cinnamon in the cake at Maribelle's. This is one of the places we were going to try, and chocolate cake is definitely high on our list...but my fiance is deathly allergic to cinnamon. I probably wouldn't have thought to ask about cinnamon in a chocolate cake...but now I won't make that mistake. So again..thanks for the head's up!!

I have posted this like 30 times tonight because I found a baker that does beautiful work with delicious cake, for cheap! She will work with in your budget, just let her know what it is and she stays with in it. In Northern Ky, but delivers. Her cell # is 859-912-3223. She used to work for Fantasy in Frosting, but IMHO has better attention to detail. (I have seen TONS of FIF cakes, AND she is cheaper.) All her flavors are the same price and she lets you choose as many flavors you want and will even do half and half on the larger tiers. $2 for Buttercream $3 for fondant and cupcakes for .65 and up.
