has anyone tried the banana ice cream?

I have a bunch (literally) of bananas that ripened so fast they literally burst open. I peeled them and put them in the freezer this morning. I was thinking about trying that banana ice cream stuff. Has anyone made it? Was it any good?

Re: has anyone tried the banana ice cream?

  • I haven't but I suggested it to my stepmother and she loved it! It seems to be the hot thing in the food blogging world now. I'm definitely going to try it soon.
  • I made it tonight- it was really good! I put a frozen banana into my little Cuisinart mini prep, added a splash of skim milk and 1/2 T peanut butter, and whizzed away. I put it in the freezer for a few minutes after. I think the skim milk made it a little thinner, like soft serve, but it was super tasty!
  • I had made it right when I heard about it, and it was a fail. Just like frozen pureed bananas--nothing special. I have been playing around with it, and I finally got it right. The tricks are:1. Make sure they are ripe when you freeze them. Even if they are a little bit green, the soft serve wont be sweet enough and it will gross you out.2. Make sure the bananas are REALLY frozen. Like, at least overnight or longer. Slice them in thin pieces before freezing.3. Food processor is the only way to go. When you first put the bananas in, the processor should go crazy. I have to hold my KitchenAid down, literally. But after a few minutes it gets better. You shouldnt need to thin it out with any liquid. If you blend it for a full five minutes, it will get smooth and creamy like soft serve without any additions.Be careful with add-ins. It might be tempting, but bananas are a relatively high calorie fruit as it is. Too many add ins and youll end up with a dessert that is comparable to ice cream in cals and fat. I usually make mine plain and just drizzle a little low-cal chocolate syrup over it.
  • That's why I just did a 1/2 T of PB. I was also short on protein and fat for the day, so that helped me out.  But ditto on the ripeness- my bananas were nice and brown when I froze them, but I can see how unripe bananas would be gross. Because unripe bananas are gross when they're not frozen, so freezing them certainly won't help!
  • I tried it a while ago.  It was ok... but not that great I guess.  Because bananas are already high calorie, I guess I'd rather have something else as my dessert.  It was good when I mixed in a tablespoon of chopped walnuts, but of course that adds to fat and calories....
  • I don't know, a medium sized banana is only about 100 cals, and so much more nutritious than any other frozen treat. I guess if you normally skip dessert, this would be considered high calorie.
  • Correction. Banana soft serve is definitely not a high calorie dessert. Made true to recipe, it would be about 100 calories if you used a medium size banana. If it is made correctly, that should yield a huge bowl of fluffy creamy soft serve...way more than a cup.Compare that to a 1/2 cup serving of regular frozen yogurt, say, with 140 cals and 6 or 7 g of fat. It still is a great dessert, but again it could lose the advantage once you add in other goodies.
