BradI'm sorry but saying "and having parents with different last names is just dumb, why create confusions and problems??? "is not cool. kids are going to be confused about alot more than just a name difference. It is more common than you think. And that is their choice.

and having parents with different last names is just dumbIt's comments like these that make me dislike you. That is not fair to say it's dumb. It works for some people and that's what they choose. It may not be for you, which is how you should word it. But to say how other people have chose to live their lives and what they choose to be called is dumb, that's just wrong IMO.

Well, unless it is illegal (and hey, even if it is), people can do whatever they want, whenever they want, for any reason or no reason at all. Whether it is annoying for them to do so is another question. Sure, it can be really annoying when people feel that they need to shove their political beliefs down others' throats, and I'm certainly sick of hearing blah blah blah about some causes. But: (a) that doesn't mean that they don't have the right to have that opinion or that it doesn't have merit; (b) in this instance, many people were not doing this because of a political belief as is clear from their responses; and (c) nobody was being obnoxious about politics here-- someone asked a question about "Did you take your husband's last name, why or why not?" and people gave their whys or their why nots. Sure, there was explanation, but this wasn't exactly an instance of anyone going on and on about how men ruin their lives and need to be castrated.

I think some think they are making a political statement and think if they do it then their kids will do it and the entire world will do it.I have to disagree, I don't think anyone said anything like this. I don't care what other people do, and don't want to influence their choice. I respect the choice other people make for themselves. I hope they do think about it and make it a choice either way.Also, we don't plan on having children. If we change our minds, we will revisit the topic.

cvl, what would have been the PC way to say it. you are causing a problem for no good reason. You will have trouble with day care, schools, getting prescriptions, legal issues, and just general people asking why the mother has a different name, cause it is very uncommon.

All you have to say is "having different names is not for me"...you don't have to say it's dumb. My Mom has a different name, so are you calling my mom dumb. That's rude and you don't know every single person's reasoning for it. My mom made a name for herself prior to marrying my Dad. She wanted to keep it. That's not dumb in my opinion. It never caused that many problems for us. I never had problems at the doctors. I went on MANY MANY wonderful vacations (including international ones) and never had any problem. Not that many people every asked me why she had a different last name.

cvl, that is a good reason. I meant the ones who are trying to turn getting married into their political stand where they think it is sexest to take his name or trying to prove that they are true feminists by keeping their name. Which is what many of the reasons where. It has to be sexest, you have two sexes joining and can only take one name.

I am changing my last name eventho most ppl think I SHOULD keep my maiden name because DH last name is NOT a pretty one. Professionally I am KEEPING my maiden name (GASP) LOL Many women now DO NOT change their last name because:A. its harder to change it than to leave it alone. Especially if you are wealthy and have a lot of investment accounts. Changing all of them is a pain in the arse. B. Its what girls want to do. I dont care what the reason is it works for them..C. There is WAY MORE in a childs life to worry about than if their moms name is the same as daddies and honestly most women that dont change their last name still get referred to as their husbands name anyway.My kids will def be made fun of for our last name. Its my DH last name. Kids are big enough bullies these days it doesnt matter what it is they will make fun of you regardless. Brad I think you are a bully for telling ppl they are confusing their kids or day care. Who the F*UCK cares what daycare thinks or what you think.. It is these womens lives and they should be able to do what they want without someone giving them C_rap about it.. Honestly GROW UP!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh yea, and BTW Brad, I grew up with a diff last name than my mom, I grew up in the time where people didn't understand it (it wasn't common in my neighborhood) and sometimes it hurt but i never NEVER thought it was dumb.Want my honest opinion and I've told FI this, I will take his name (he's ok if I don't) for one reason, I dislike my father, and I refuse to carry his name on. How's that for reasons!

i have my mothers maiden name and thats why i wanted to keep it, esp since she im the last one (single child).I went with syn's last name though and switched it to the middle.**i really didnt read any of the other posts...so im sorry if i missed something**
