Re: When to change your name?

  • you have to wait until you are actually married.
  • The only paperwork/forms I've had to do is fill out the SS-5 form and bring that to my local SS office. I applied for a new card, took that receipt of application to the DMV, got my new license, went to the bank, changed my name on my accounts. I still have to do a few things, but it doesn't take too long. The longest part is waiting the few weeks to be able to pick up your marriage cert. This is the form I had to fill out. • It's easy. After you're married take the marriage license to the SS office, get your new card, go to the DMV, get new ID and start chaning your name. Finito.
  • You'll need your marriage certificate to make it official. You can get software where you only have to enter the info once and it prints all the standard forms for you as well as creates a form letter to notify people that don't require a form.

  • I think it was MrsB who said a while back that she just changed her name as the bills came in. Rather than do it all at once, whenever she got her bills she'd call them to change her name. That's what I've done. Oh, and I think you need to fill out paperwork for your Passport. You can start filling out paperwork whenever, but you need the actual marriage cert before sending it in.

  • You need your marriage license to begin, which is at the Social Security office. You're not going to be able to do a thing until you receive a certified license back from your county's clerk of court (we got ours about 2 weeks after the wedding).
  • Changing my name has been a huge PITA for me. My utilities companies keep asking for "the name change form". There is no name change form, just my marriage cert and new ID (which I have) , but they keep insisting on getting the name change form. I'm not sure where to go from here...

  • As others have said, you do it after you get the marriage certificate back, which (at least here) you obtain from the county courthouse where you got your license from.I'm still finding random sh*t with my old name on it. Stupid things like my Safeway club card...lol
