One Week! GAH! Advice?

I've noticed that so many people have moved in the past few months. Mine takes place a week from today! After much anticipation, no less! All of my stuff is sitting in my mom's garage, just waiting...we're getting BF packed by Monday at the extreme latest. We have a moving company to help us out, and calling in a few favors from friends.

Anyone have any advice to make a move-in day smooth? Things to do first, second, etc?

I don't know if this matters in your case or if it is the same in the US. Although I'm under the impression that USPS is better than Canada Post. Anyway, set up your change of address with them ahead of time because it takes awhile to get into the system. I forgot when I moved. So, that was the only thing that I timed out badly.

    1. Eat a decent breakfast. You'll want to have as much energy as you can get.
    2. Put as much stuff away as soon as possible that you can. Make it feel like "home" a lot sooner, plus you don't have to go through boxes to find little things every time.
    3. Have money aside for all the little things you'll need. Cleaners, paper towels, trash can, trash bags, etc. Make a list before you go shopping. Either way, you'll probably be making a lot of trips that first couple of weeks.
    4. After you're done, be sure to thank your friends... order a pizza, have a beer, whatever your style is. Moving can be a pain for anyone, especially for people that aren't getting a new place. Be sure to let them know you appreciate their help.
If this is the first place you and your BF are sharing, you will probably get a lot of hand-me-downs from friends and family. Only keep what you need, if anything. You don't want to start off with more clutter before everything is put away.

    Good luck and happy moving!!

    Lots of labels.

    Unpack your bed first.

Know where toliet paper and paper cups/plates are.

Pack a suitcase like you're going out of town for 2 weeks, so that you have everything you would need in the next 2 weeks.  I totally agree that you should unpack as soon as possible, but it helps to know you have the clothes and personal items you'll need for the next 2 weeks at least.

    - Label everything as clearly as possible, and make sure everything is in sturdy boxes/bags. This was a lifesaver last time I moved!
    - I really like Cate's idea of having a 'suitcase' for 2 weeks (including toiletries - you'll probably want to shower that night), I wish I had done this. It was so frustrating trying to find the clothes I wanted for work the first couple of days.
    - Get your bed set up, and your kitchen basics put away first. You'll want to know where you have your bedding and towels packed for easy access.
    - You might also want to do things like vaccuum (sp?), dust, and other general cleaning before you start to unpack everything, so have cleaning supplies at the ready. A healthy stock of garbage bags will also come in handy for throwing away packaging, garbage, and other things you don't want/need.
He pretty much had me at "hello".

I've moved 13 times in the past 7 years, so I've gotten pretty good at this.  The suitcase is really the only way to stay sane.  It also allows you to pack up things ahead of time.

Also, buy some paper plates, cups and silverware now so you can pack up your kitchen stuff.  That takes way more time than you'd think.

After my move last year, I swore I wouldn't use USPS change of address again. It caused a lot more problems than it fixed. And unfortunately, it caused all of my junk mail to follow me, too!

    Thanks all!

Hazel - EEK! Almost forgot about address change. Good idea. I'll get to that this week.

Sassy - I probably would have totally forgotten about breakfast, as usual! Thanks. Also, pizza for the friends is a given! Yes, this is our 1st place together and a majority of stuff is hand-me-down. It's saved us a ton of money. Plus garage-saling has been our friend.

kat - our bedroom set doesn't come until the next day! apparently the store we ordered it from only delivers to certain areas on certain days, and that was the closest to our move-in date we could get  />_<  But good idea about the toilet paper.

sunbird & cate - overnight bag has been packed for some time now! I'm displaced between sleeping on my mom's couch and staying overnight with friends. I basically have a huge suitcase I keep in my car that has shoes/clothes/toiletries/makeup/other neccesities. It's going to stay packed until our bedroom furniture arrives.

Anne - great idea about cleaning, we'll probably need to do that since the apartment is currently being renovated before we move in!

Any more new suggestions are always welcome!
