NWR: how much do tattoos hurt?

Re: NWR: how much do tattoos hurt?

  • Mines on the back of my neck (so obviously theres a bit of bone there) and it wasn't bad at all. To me it just felt like little shocks and lots of vibrations. It was more intense over the bone but I'd do it again.
  • It really depends on your pain tolerance.I agree, it also depends on where you get it. The one on my low back was easy. It is a fatty area with no bone. The ones on my upper back/shoulder area, hip, ankle were a little worse, but the most painful but also favorite was my tribal frog on my foot. It is bigger and your foot is all bone. My foot was so swollen it was hard to wear shoes. I had like a jelly under my skin. I could push down and leave a finger indent in the swollen area. But I love that one most. Rule of thumb if it is going over bone it will hurt worse.
  • I have one on the back of my neck. It hurt, kind of like someone scratching their fingernails over a bad sunburn. It took and hour and after about 20 minutes I was able to stop gripping my sister's hands so hard and stop making my teeth-clenching "ow, this fricking hurts!" face. However, when I went back in to get the touch-up a few weeks later it only took 5 minutes and I almost passed out. I think I had not eaten that morning so one of the other artists went and got me some orange juice. That sucked.

  • I've got one on my upper thigh and it hurt BAD. I had it redone last year and I think it hurt worse than the first time. It's a lot of color, so I'm sure that may be a reason why. I think I have an okay pain tolerance too.I didn't scream or cry though, I SWEAT... a lot!
  • I think how much it hurts also depends on size/how long it takes.  It doesn't hurt very much at all to get a small tattoo.  My back tattoo took 3 hours and was really painful for days.  I wouldn't let the pain change any factor of the tattoo because the pain is temporary and the tattoo is permanent.  Don't let it affect location!

  • Oh also, the three hour tattoo was part of a party, which left me lying there thinking "why didn't we do something ENJOYABLE for a PARTY?"

  • I have 3, and let me tell you, THEY ARE ADDICTING! One on my shoulder blade, hip and buttox! The shoulder hurt, but not unbearable...Just breathe! The one on my rear didn't hurt a bit, and the one on my hip only stung when he got close to the bone. All of my tats have color, and I actually thought it hurt less when they were coloring it in, you tend to numb up by that point. Choose wisely and enjoy!
