Wedding Ring Care

I am always so nervous about breaking my engagement ring! I've been told to watch out for loose stones, and I've noticed some scratches already, it is white gold. Any other tips on how to protect/clean your ring? I know I can take it to my jeweler which I will before the wedding one last time but just easy everyday stuff? I also already have insurance on it.

Thanks!

Re: Wedding Ring Care

  • Metal scratches. That's just the way it goes. Your diamond won't scratch, but expect the band to. They make jewelry cleaners that you can buy at stores, but I just soak mine in warm water with some gentle soap from time to time.
  • There's really nothing you can do about scratches on the band. It happens. Diamonds won't scratch though.

I have found that soaking my ring in windex, rinsing with cool water and drying with a paper towel works best.

  • I heard that if you have your ring coated in rhodium (sp?) it will not get any marks.

Mine is coated in that and it NEVER gets dirty. Had it for 2 months now. I am a nanny i go through all messes and it it always spotless.

But, i see light minor wear and tear, no deep scratches though and I have banged it about a bit.

    best of luck!

  • As far as loose stones go I recently found out there is a catch in my insurance. I thought a stone was loose and immediately put my ring in a plastic baggy and took it to the jeweler. It turns out I'm crazy and the stone was not loose at all (better safe than sorry, right?)

But I found out that athough my insurance covers lost stones, that is ONLY if I get the ring inspected every 6 months. They do the insection on site and it take a few minutes, and it's free, but I had NO idea. If a stone falls out and I'm not current on my inspections they won't cover it. SCARY! My fiance forgot that little detail and I had had the ring for 7 months before I took it in!

  • You can clean it once a week or however often you want by soaking it a few seconds in water with a drop of dawn dish soap (the regular blue kind). I've also read that some people use water and OxyClean (cause I got some on my ring and wanted to check if that was ok). I would check with a jeweler before you use that though, or at least someone with more knowledge about that than me. ;-) White gold is coated in rhodium like PP have said, and you should have some kind of care plan which lets you get it cleaned and polished and rhodiumed every six months. That will get rid of the scratches, but yes scratches will happen on the metal. Rhodium doesn't prevent scratches but the jewelers will polish them out and then redo the rhodium. They should also check for loose stones when you take it to get cleaned. And like I said if you have the care plan that should all be free (at least at good jewelers like Jared it's free). They might even let you do it more often than six months. I know Jared will, if your ring is from them. I didn't know it's only insured if you do it every six months but it's good to do it even if that wasn't the case. There's also daily care tips you can find online, like this: http://engagementrings.lovetoknow.com/wiki/Caring_for_Your_Engagement_Ring

  • you can get it recoated every so often.. the insurance i have on my ring i have to take it in every 6 months and get it cleaned and inspected .. but i honestly bought this sunshine cleaning product at a bridal show I went to and it is the most amazing stuff ever! even after i take it to the jewelers i will clean it at home and it still gets stuff they missed and it shines like its brand new I love it!
