Just Engaged and Proposals

Just engaged and looking for a ring

My boyfriend just proposed to me and knowing how picky I am with jewelry, he decided to let me pick my ring. The problem is that I just recently moved to Iowa, so I have no idea what good stores are in the area. A further issue is that I do not like the typical engagement rings with a big solitaire rock, or worse, a ton of tiny diamonds everywhere. They are just not my style. I would much rather have pearls or some other stone, such as topaz or aquamarine but I can't find a store online that seems to offer that. If any of you ladies can point out a few jewelry stores that have some selection of such rings, I would be extremely grateful!

  • I forgot to say that I am in the Des Moines area :) (too much engagement excitement!)
  • Try posting on your local board

  • Also pearls don't make good engagement rings, they're not really made for everyday wear. I have a pearl ring that I only wear on special occasions.

You could also check into moissanite rings, which are lab created diamonds, and they can do them in colors.

  • My cousin was going to get his wifey a pearl ring, but the jeweler told him that was a no-go for everyday wear since it can actually absorb water and become brittle (who knew!)

Just something to ask about. I'd also try posting on the local board... congrats to you and good luck in your search for the perfect ring :)
  • Yeah, don't do pearls for every day use.  You'll end up breaking it or having something else happen.

Perhaps look into antique jewelry also.
  • What other type of stoned do you like. Almost any mainstream jewelry store will carry a selection of sapphire, pearl ,opal, amethyst, garnet, ruby and emerald rings. Or check on-line maybe

all have good quality jewelry or if you want to spend a little more you can always  look at

You do need to be careful what type of stone you will wear. Many of them are not durable for every day wear. Sapphires are the next hardest stone to diamonds and they come in many colors.
  • I would also bypass emeralds as they are very soft stones and can scratch and damage easily. But, as everyone else has said, there are many different stones and I'm sure you can find something unique that you love. I would post on your local board for stores. www.gia.edu May have some helpful information....it's the Gemological Institute of America Website (I'm a bit of a jewelry fanatic! :) )
