Q for married ladies assuming new name

I am planning to assume my husband's last name, but am not too sure when this can be done.  I checked the government website and it says you can't get the marriage certificate until the wedding is registered - which can take 10-12 weeks. I would prefer to get it done sooner because I want to use my new name this year in the schools, but until everything (bank, board, etc) is changed then I think it would just be too confusing for the schools.  What have you done so far regarding change of name - what exactly is the process?

I am a teacher as well, and would like to start NEXT year off with my new name! A colleague of mine got married August 2008 and just got all of her board email and pay and everything changed with her new last name this week. Last year she just told coworkers and students what her new married name was, but the student timetables still had her old name. I think generally school boards deal with name changes or payroll changes between school years, but I would call your board and ask - it might be easier than you think?

I am an occasional teacher right now, so I think it will be easier to get my stuff changed.  It really is just a matter of getting the marriage certificate, but it seems to take so long.  I guess I am worried about it being an issue if the office has my old last name and I tell the students to call me by my new last name.  I worry about it being a payroll issue as well if the office gets mixed up by the change.  Maybe I should just stick to my old last name for the time being.

There isn't a problem if you ask the kids to call you by one name and there is another name on your file. They can still call you by your new last name but all your paper work will be your old one until things get switched over. I think it may take longer for an occasional than for a full time because full time teachers tend to get priority. I'm an LTO (for 4 years) and it always takes less time for changes to happen to a full time teacher than for a supply.

I assumed my ex-husband's name in my first marriage.  You are correct in that you can't change any of your documents until you have that marriage certificate in hand.  I don't believe it took nearly that long to get mine though, I seem to remember it only taking a couple of weeks.  This was 14 years ago though so the system may have slowed down a bit since then.I don't see how it would hurt to call yourself by your new last name but still have all your documents in your maiden name for a short while.  I know women that do this in other professions quite easily.

I took my marriage certificate (the one the JP gave us right after the ceremony) in to a registries office and they changed my drivers licence on the spot. For everything else I am now waiting for my actual card to come in the mail and for my DL to show up. I can't change anything at the bank without two pieces of ID with my new last name on it........it will be a waiting game for me. Good luck!
