a facebook status on my newsfeed:Today is a BIG day for me. Heading to the Social Security office to start becoming Rachel [married name]. YIKES. Hope I don't chicken out.there are some half-ass "um, wow. i'm surprised. congrats?" then one girl said "you took longer than I did to give in...It took me about 2 mins to change my name...which I am still mad about almost 3 years later!"then OP comments and says: "Just to update you all. I am literally having a panic attack and crying at home. Mourning the loss of Rachel [maiden name], whom I love dearly....." followed by more comments of "don't do it! you'll regret it!"WTF. that is all.

I will never understand people who do stuff like that. If you're so attached to your name, don't change it. I couldn't wait to change mine because Spiderman is a kickass last name to have.

My maiden name was lame, and I wanted to be rid of it. If I had not, I wouldn't have. There would be no panic attacks or crying, and there certainly wouldn't be an AWing on FB.

I couldn't change my name fast enough*. My maiden name was long, boring, and hard to pronounce.*At least on my social security card. Three years later, I still have not changed my driver's license. I hate the DMV that muhch.

i can't wait to change mine because it's long and polish and has a Z in it and confuses people. but if i ever had any doubt, it would be an easy decision to, you know, NOT go out of my way to change it. i'm just assuming he's holding a loaded gun to her head.

I'm a hyphen. I love my maiden name. I hypened out of being all caught up in love and BS at the moment, but I never use his part, never changed my credit cards, etc. He didn't want me to change my name- he liked my "Damn the man" attitude in general and thought keeping my name would be in keeping with my personality. Then, he toyed with changing his to mine until we found out all the red tape involved with that.

Yeah, as happy as I was to change my name, I still only managed to change it on about half the places I should. Any place that required me to fax them something still has my maiden name.

Any place that required me to fax them something still has my maiden name. This is pretty much where we are. I changed my SS card and my license, and a few of the accounts we use all the time. Then I pretty much ran out of steam.Brett did want me to change my name more than I wanted to change it. I didn't really care. But if I was crying and mourning the loss of my maiden name there would be no question about me keeping it.

It wasn't even really a discussion in my house. I love my maiden name and had no intention to ever change it. I asked my husband if it bothered him and he laughed. He never thought I would change it.If you are having such a panic attack about it now, I would assume you are just going to resent your husband for it later.

I dropped my middle name and made my maiden name my middle name. If I had to do it over again I would have just kept my maiden name. I like it and feel weird with my H's last name. I never cried about it though.

Her knot name cracked me up in that context.Wasn't she planning on having girl children have her name and boy children have her husband's name?

This is why I kept my name. When it came down to it, I would have changed it only because everyone else wanted and expected me to, not because I wanted to. So that, of course, is not a good enough reason for me. I will say, however, that I'm tired of people looking at me like I'm some sort of circus freak when I tell them that I kept my name and have no intention of changing it. But again, that's not enough reason to change

Fallin- I wish I did not just because I feel it was a silly thing to do for a silly reason. But, it does come in handy to have both in certain situations. Like, my car is in mh's name because he bought it when we were engaged. My name is not anywhere on that car. But, when I went to get service and a loaner today at the dealership, they didn't give me a hassle because she saw we have the same name (essentially) so she's like, "Oh, I'll just add you on" and handed me keys. I just know if I didn't have his name somewhere on my license, they would've given me a hard time.

I don't see why anyone would make a huge deal out of it. It's not like you can't change it backActually, in many states, changing back requires a court order and time, red tape and money. So it is a fairly large deal.
