should we make another registry?

CN: We're already registered in 3 places.  MOH may throw a themed shower that our current registries would't apply to.  Should we make another registry?

Long version: FI and I registered early because our families kept asking us to so they could shop off the registries for our birthdays and other gift-giving holidays.  We're registered at a regional department store, at BB&B (these two registries have pretty much the same things on them, we know some people prefer one store over the other so we made registries at both) and at Target.  All 3 of our current registries have had gifts purchased off of them.

My mother mentioned to me that my MOH has talked about hosting a shower for us (she wants it to be a 'surprise' but since my mother hates surprises she always tells about them...but that's another issue).  MOH wants it to be an "outdoor" themed shower since FI and I like to hike and camp and kayak and that kind of thing.  We actually could use new outdoor equipment, but we had planned to buy these things for ourselves after the wedding so we stuck with a more traditional registry.  We couldn't imagine our aunts shopping for sleeping bags and PFDs and we actually could use dishes and towels, so we went the traditional route.  MOH wants to invite many of our friends, who wouldn't feel out of place in the camping department, to this shower.

I think 3 registries is pushing the limits of acceptability, 4 seems over-the-top and even borderline-gift-grabby to me and I don't want to be that girl.  But putting myself in a guest's shoes, outdoor equipment is just as personal as sheets and towels, I wouldn't know what to buy a couple if they didn't give hints on these things.

My MOH would feel so out of place at a traditional shower, they're not her style and she wouldn't participate in one, let alone throw one. I think it's so kind of her to want to throw a shower for us, I don't want to hurt her feelings in any way.

So, finally to the question: if the outdoor themed shower goes as planned, should we make another registry for those types of items?  Are four registries really too many?  Should we replace one of our registries with another at an outdoor store?  Am I over-thinking this?

Thanks, all.

  • I think a camping themed shower is kinda weird, but Target has camping gear.

  • Camping/outdoor activity themed showers may be weird to some.  But it actually is our style.  I don't see it as any more unusual than a "kitchen equipment" themed shower, and I personally find it much less offensive than a lingerie themed shower (not that those had been brought up, I was just trying to think of other shower themes that might be more common).  It's not that MOH is throwing a shower that she's comfortable with and that I won't like.  It's that she likes to do things a slightly less traditional way and this is her way of throwing a shower.

Yes, you're right, jinx, Target does have camping equipment...but they don't have any that we would actually use.  The physical demand we put on our camping equipment is more than what they sell can survive.  I don't want to ask our guests to buy us things that we know upfront that we won't appreciate or use.

Consolidating two of our existing registries is looking more appealing.
  • exactly what panda said, if you want camping stuff and you think you'll get some of it from friends then combine the first 2 into 1 BBB registry.

  • I think if you combine two of them you could register at a place like REI.  I wouldn't keep four registries, I agree with you that it seems gift grabby.

  • I may be way off here, but isn't high quality, durable camping stuff expensive? Will you really have enough things on there in a wide enough price range, especially with lots of small, lower-priced items for a shower? I am guessing most people spend $25-$75 on a shower gift (depending on area, relationship) and you'd need lower price points as well, and wonder if there would be enough things that you'd actually really want for camping in this range.   A major plus of a regular shower is guests have flexibility to choose what they want, and have many more options. I worry you're forcing guests to feel like they have to spend a lot.

You're not way off.  The things we are planning to buy ourselves after the wedding are in the $150 range (around 4 things).  There are lower priced things we'd like as well but weren't necessarily planning to buy right away, we could replace a lot of used equipment in order to pick a few items in the $0-$75 range.  But still, if we make one, it will be a small registry.  And that just leads back to my original question.
  • Eh, I think you can get some flashlights and nalgene bottles in the cheaper range.

If you go through with this shower, maybe just open it FOR the shower and then close it afterward. Don't mention it on your website or to other people who ask.

  • Just use something like myregistry.com that will let  you have one registry with the stuff from all 4 stores on it. That way people going to the shower will know to look for camping stuff, and then for the wedding people will realize there's actual household stuff you need. And you won't have more than one registry.

    This might work too...

    Thanks :)
  • i would just go for it. it isn't like you will have 4 registries... 2 are practically the same and you just have them for guests that live in different areas, so really that is just 1 registry. i see nothing wrong with registering at a 4th place for your camping gear. i agree, you would never use the stuff from target. it is more backyard/campground stuff and would fall apart quickly for you uses. even though you will have some big ticket items, guests can pool their money to buy a more expensive item or they can get you some smaller stuff that you don't need at the moment but will eventually need to replace. make sure to register for some funny small items that you actually want, like i don't know, toe warmers and socks. you want to take the pressure off of guests that they have to spend a lot of money to get you a gift you will appreciate and love.
