tuna stealer

So to go along with my numerous puppy posts, here's yet another one. Emma jumped up and snatched my tuna sandwich off the counter this morning. Last weekend, it was the raw chicken breast I was cutting up and the knife! She jumped up while I was cooking yesterday and turned my burner off on the stove and adjusted the temperature on my oven. I can't get her to stay down. Not only is it annoying, it's really dangerous. But between climbing over baby gates, digging out and escaping from the backyard, crashing around the house like a bull in a china shop 24/7, and now stealing food off the counter, I'm tempted to get rid of her. I know she's just a baby, but I'm not convinced I will survive her "puppy stage" that everyone keeps telling me will last a few YEARS based on her breed...ugh.

  • Train your dog.

  • People like you shouldn't own dogs, or any animal.

  • Have you looked into training, or at home training books/tecniques to keep the dog from jumping up/stealing food off the counter. Getting rid of her is just a cop out. Dogs are hard work.
  • Ummm don't let her in the kitchen while you are cooking.

  • Sounds like you need to train your dog.  Places like Petco have classes.
  • "Train your dog." Wow! Ya think? Easier said than done genius. And "people like me shouldn't own dogs" ? I've had dogs all my life. Literally, I've had over ten dogs in my life and some since they were puppies. I've just never had this much trouble training one and I'm getting frustrated. She's a chocolate lab. She's 5-6 months old and a good 35-40lbs I'd say.
  • Don't get me wrong I have a puppy in the house that I get frustrated with but people shouldn't get dogs if they are not willing to accept that they may be difficult.
  • Why the fukc would you get a dog without researching first?

  • I'm tempted to get rid of her.I stand by my statement. Don't come on a public forum and talk about giving up your dog and expect people to support you. Also there is a Pets board on the nest, not sure why you are posting this on P&E.

  • It doesnt sound like youre training her properly. Maybe you should have researched the breed a bit before just buying a dog. I guess since youre such a dog expert though, that wasnt necessary. Dont forget to get rid of your kids too when they misbehave or take a while to learn things.
  • I agree with pp; train your dog. It's YOUR responsibility to make sure she doesn't do all those things, not hers. Honestly, it's not rocket science. It's just like having a kid. You're in charge and you have to do whatever necessary to make sure your pet is healthy and doesn't try to eat knives. I'm judging you right now.
  • I say look into obedience training. Labs can be very distructive and energetic. My vet recommends it for ALL dogs.
  • Grad, I'm pretty sure it's the getting rid of her part that struck a nerve with people.  Dogs are like children.  You can't just get rid of them because they are difficult.  And trust me, I have the pint sized version of Marley.  She's even done the jump out of the car window thing.  But I still <3 her and would never ever give her up.
  • Salt It's a nice thought but again, easier said than done. There are no doors that close going to my kitchen and she climbs over gates at her leisure.
  • Yeah, I don't feel sorry for you.  I feel  sorry for the dog, especially if he has to go to the pound.

  • Damn right it struck a nerve with me. I am not one to be too snarky but I believe animals should be treated as family members and not unpersonal objects to be given or thrown away whenever they aren't convenient anymore.

  • Now I'm judging you more for being a brat about the situation.
  • I see you making a lot of excuses for why this is happening, how about owning up to your responsibilities as a pet owner. What are you doing to try to train this dog?
  • Well that's just it, you need to train her to stay out of the kitchen and not subsitute locking her in and out of rooms for training. You're the boss, make sure she knows it. Don't take no for an answer. If you can't train the dog on your own, get professional help.
  • You've had the dog for 5 months and you're thinking of getting rid of her.  Are you kidding!?
  • i so badly want a puppy.luckily at this point of my life i know i dont have enough time to give it all the training and attention it needs so i didnt get one.puppies are very cute, and very inconvenient. duh.
  • You didn't indicate anything about training in your first post.  If you can't manage it, get outside assistance through a class of some kind.  Whatever you choose, it is your responsibility as a pet owner to train you dog rather than being a brat and making excuses about it.  FI's mom trains standard poodle puppies.  Is it a pain?  Sometimes.  Do they EVER steal food?  No.  Why?  They would not get away with it.

  • How much exercise is she getting?  A lot of that behavior can probably be controlled by making sure she's worn out at the end of the day. If she's this much trouble now, you need to get her into classes while she's young.  Allowing her to get away with this stuff now will only teach her that she can get away with it later.  It's much more difficult to train and control a large adult lab than a puppy.

  • I feel bad that you are having trouble with your puppy, but if you are so experienced with dogs and have had them all your life, then a) this should not come as a surprise to you, and b) you should know that you need to train a puppy--they don't magically become well behaved.  If you get rid of your puppy because you have failed to train her properly, I'm sorry, but you suck.

  • HaHa salt!  It must of been a damnn good sandwhich.
  • Didn't mean to make myself sound like some monster by saying she makes me crazy and sometimes I feel like it would be easier than the aggravation. I love her, don't get me wrong. We're looking into obedience training but haven't decided if we're going to enroll her yet. She needs it though I guess. And no, we didn't research a dog to buy. Some friends had to get rid of her because they are in the military and were moving and my husband and I decided to take her. We've been trying to train her, it's not like we just sit aside and let her do as she pleases. It's just hard to keep fussing about the same thing a thousand times a day and it doesn't sink in with her and she's right back to it the next day.
  • Here is my point- Yesterday my neighbor's  (and BF) sons found a kitten by their bus stop. It was very sweet and very gentle. The boys brought it to their house and then my friend called me and told me the cat's ears were bleeding. I went over to look and the cat's ears and looked like they were being eaten away from the inside out. He kept shaking his head and scratching. We took it to my vet and the vet said it was ear mites. This was the worst case of ear mites I have ever seen. My vet thankfully gave me a big discount on the price of the visit and my friend and I split the cost. He is caged right now and we are treating him. My point is, this is someone's cat. He is too tame to be a stray. His owners could NOT have missed his ears. They were horrible and because his owners said, "fukc it" and decided not to care for THEIR pet, my friend and I felt we had to take responsibility. This isn't the first stray we have taken control of. It pisses me off to no end.
