  • It was my 2nd year teaching (middle school). Before I found out, I was running errands around the school and noticed that everyone in the office seemed really off.  I wondered what was going on, but figured it was a school thing.I went back to my office and another coworker came in and told me.  I'll never forget where I was standing and what everything looked like. The rest of the day was a haze.  Parents came up to school to get their kids.  We had to read a statement to our 6th period classes that was extremely generalized. A kid said to me "my parents work in the city...will they be coming home tonight?"  I almost lost it right there.

  • My dad was on a plane.  When the pilot got word he told the passengers that they were having mechanical issues with the plane and had to divert to an airport in Canada.  When they landed the pilot told them he had never lied to passengers in the 20 or so years he had been flying, and told them what really happened.  My dad called us the minute he set foot in the airport.  It's the best phone call I've ever received.

And betrothed, I'm disgusted with most of the comments that you have posted. I don't think I've ever read such judgmental comments in my life. I'm so lucky that the girls I speak to on theknot are nothing like you...I would've never come on here for ADVICE if I would've encountered a big a bitch as you. I genuinely feel awful for your children or your future children, and I think it would be irresponsible of YOU not to invest in their future therapy sessions starting now. Because trust me when I tell you honey, they're gonna need it. ~jcaruncho2010

  • I was also a senior in high school.  Found out about the first plane in my first class and had heard about the second one by second period.  It didn't really hit me until like 3rd or 4th period when I saw my AP Chem teacher crying.  Not sure if he had a connection to someone in one of the towers or if he just felt emotional about it, but I just remember thinking "my TEACHER is crying?"
  • Wow, Bec, that's an amazing story. One of my best friend's DH lost a good friend on the flight that hit the second tower. It definitely changed his life...he has an MD/Phd and was going to do some high powered crazy research career, and after 9/11 made the decision to focus on family a lot more.
  • bec - what a story. DH is from LI and quite a few of his wall street buddies quit after 9/11 and are leading happier lives. I have a friend who flew out of Boston the same time those planes left.  She was on her way to St Thomas.  It really effected her and her BF, as she knows it could have well been her plane they got on.  When she flew back to Boston 2 weeks later her car was in a very loney lot.  She handed the ticket to the cashier.  He noticed the date and just said "Welcome home" and didn't charge her.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Wow bec, that would be intense. What a lucky guy.
  • It was my Freshmen year in college  but I did not have classes that day and I was at home and watched it with my mom.
  • At work (technology department of the brokerage arm of a bank in NC). Got a call from a coworker, saying she'd heard about a plane crashing into the tower. I pulled up the internet to msnbc, finally got it to load, just in time to see the second plane. It was one of the worst things I have ever seen, but like in a dream - it was unreal. Later, I stood around a small TV in a workroom with several coworkers and we watched the towers fall.  My boss turned to us and asked for a handful (like 4 out of 40) tech volunteers to stay and man the phones, and told the rest of us to go home and be with our families.I remember how weird it was to see the skies so empty - my drive home was under a flight path. It was surreal. I went to my now-ex-husband's workplace, and he was like, "so?" That should have been red flag #1.

  • I was in my junior year of college at an early class and saw people running in the halls.  They later canceled classes and set up the news in one of the auditoriums where I spent the rest of the day when I wasn't waiting to use the (yes) pay phone to call and find out if my sister and other family members were okay.

  • Still sleeping in my dorm in college. A boy friend from downstairs came busting in in only a towel and woke me up. We spent the rest of the morning glued to the TV. I still remember everything, like what I was wearing, what my sheets were, etc. Makes the hair on my arms stand up just thinking about it.

  • Wow Bec, that's an intense story.
  • I was just getting up when they announced the first plane on the radio.  The second plane hit as I was driving to work.  On Baseline.  Between Sher. Pk and Edmonton.

  • Bec, that's a great story.  :: tear:: I know I need to slow the eff down sometimes too.
  • I remember the empty skies too. Where I lived in Tucson was close to not only the airport flight path but also the Air Force base. I clearly remember the eery lack of airplane noise. When they finally started flying again, it was almost scary, when before it had been so familiar that I didn't even notice it.

  • AC and Bec, your stories have made my heart stop.I'm not so sure there aren't many people in the country who have/had some form of PTSD from that day and the coverage of it, even if they weren't in DC or New York.To this day, I cannot watch replays of the coverage without shaking and panicking and remembering how awful I felt. I also remember thinking my family needed "a plan" of where we'd meet if we ever had to evacuate where we lived (I lived in Charlotte, brother/family live in Richmond, parents were in KC-K).  I said something to my brother about it, and he said, "my family is here." Red flag #2... I didn't consider now-ex-husband my family.

  • Bec-that story gave me the chills. I was home, getting ready for one of my morning classes.  I watched it on the news all day, did not leave the house for the rest of the week. I skipped school and work until the following week. I was literally was scared to leave my house.   I couldn't get in touch w my dad all day either because all the phones were down.  It really changed my life forever.
  • He is a COMPLETELY different person. He lost 60lbs, bought a house overlooking the mountains, married my sister, bought a yacht, and they are never home. They go and do things that most people only get around to saying, "one day." They both still work really hard, but he does conference calls from the mountains and only goes into the office once or twice a month. They live a dream life because they decided to. I want that kind of courage. I need to snap a pic the next time I'm up there of the ticket. No one ever believes me when I tell that story!
  • I was living in Yonkers, NY at the time.  I was in my apt and my mother called me. She was in Manhatten downtown just a few blocks away.   I was so shocked and scared - I had class that night in Manhatten and still thought I should go.  I didn't know how to handle the world just stopping.
  • Bec, that is a great story!

  • That was the year I was a stay-at-home mom. I was getting ready to go to my parent's house to stay with my grandmother, who was recovering from foot surgery. I was watching the Today show, and watched, horrified, as the second plane fly into the tower. I drove to my parent's house (5 minutes away) and we watched all day. My dad was working as a news editor for a local newspaper, so he had access to the latest AP reports. And to make you all feel young again, I was 34 at the time, with a 3 year old and 5 month old.
  • I was in New York City - I arrived at work and everyone was in the huddle room watching TV. At the time I lived 15 blocks from the site but was underground on the subway when the first plane hit.
  • Bec--wow what a story. I was at work--was working at Barnes & Noble downtown Pittsburgh at the time. I went into the backroom--the guy who did receiving always had Howard Stern on. I caught something about a plane crashing into a building. Thought maybe it was from a previous show then realized it was current. The 2nd plane hit. We took the previous night's deposit to the bank, by the time we got back, the plane had hit the Pentagon. I had opened so it was about my break time, but by then there had been the warnings of a plane flying over downtown Pgh, so I waited to hear what was happening. A couple regulars who worked in govt buildings started coming in saying they were being evacuated. Shortly after, we got word to evacuate downtown. I have never been so grateful to be in walking distance of my neighborhood. The streets and bus stops were packed. My co-worker who lived on the same side of town as me and I walked across the bridge together. Neither of us wanted to go home and be alone so we went to one of our favorite bars. Got the last 2 seats at the end of the bar and got hammered while watching the coverage on the news.  A couple from my neighborhood was sitting next to us, the wife, Michelle was very pregnant. Their daughter is almost 8 now, and I just always remember sitting there with them.

  • Pirata--I got totally wasted that night, too (and stayed that way for most of the week, I think). I'm healthy like that.
  • I had just gotten out of the shower and was getting ready for a class (sophmore year of college) when my sister and our other roommate called me in a panic from work. I turned on the TV and had to keep relaying everything that was happening. Our roommates brother (who's also one of my sister best friends) worked for the Pentagon as Capital Police so it was pretty scary talking to her. Luckily we later found out that he was off duty that day.

  • I'm late but... My mom had just woke me up (a little earlier than normal) and I went out to the couch for my hot chocolate like I did every morning and my mom told me that something had happened and we watched the news all morning then all day at school we watched tv/ listened to the radio. I was 14 at the time and in the 9th grade.
  • Becca, that's scary as hell.I was in college.  My roommate and I were in the same class at 10:30, and we had overslept and didn't go to breakfast.  As we were walking out of the dorms to go to class, everyone had their door open and people were in eachother's rooms watching TV.  We didn't know what was going on, but when we got to our World Civ class, others told us what happened, and I can't remember if class was canceled or if our prof let us watch the coverage in class, but I know we didn't go to any real classes for the rest of the day. That early in the morning, there were still a lot of unknowns.  Until the 2nd plane hit, it was being reported as an accident (at least where we were, it was).  It wasn't until the next day we found out who it was.  A lot of our classmates from NY couldn't get ahold of their families--even people who were fine couldn't be contacted because the cell towers were so overwhelmed.
  • I feel old too. I was sleeping (West Coast) and my (now) ex-H called in a panic to tell me the WTC had been bombed (didn't have the correct details yet.) I remember saying "Again?" then falling back asleep. It wasn't until I got up a hour or so later for work and turned on the news that I realized what had really happened. The rest of the day was a blur.I was working at my first job with a video game company. The tv's in all the lounges were on all day and no one did any work. My boss eventually sent me home as I was the receptionist at the time and I was just in so much shock I could barely talk.Half my family lives in New York, and most of them are firefighters and police officers. We couldn't get ahold of anyone for days, my grandfather kept trying to call. Turns out everyone was ok, but several were part of the rescue effort and it was awful. I'm freaked out just thinking about it right now.
