Pre-Marital Counseling/Counselor

Ladies,Is anyone getting pre-marital counseling?  How far in advance of the wedding did you start?  What is it like?  For example, how often did you go? How much is it?  Did insurance help any (or is this another expense for the wedding budget)?  FH and I think it extremely important to do this.  But we're not really sure where to start even looking.  We are not part of any organized religion so we wouldn't go to a pastor or anything like that.  Has anyone had any particularly good experiences with anyone?

This is a great question and I'm glad you asked.  This is something that is very important to me but I'm in the same boat-not really sure where to start.

We actually start our pre-marital counseling on Monday. We had to take these classes in order for my Pastor to marry us. Of course we wanted to do it anyway. But since my pastor is in Ohio, he is having us go to one of his friends who is a Pastor down here and her church is where we will be doing our counseling. We both had to take a test basically about our relationship seperately and we are going to discuss our answers with the counselor. I am not quite sure where you would go if it weren't with a church. Maybe call a few family counselors and I'm sure they know people who do marriage counseling. HTH

For my fiance's church, it's required. So if you wanna get married in a church and by their pastor, you might wanna just ask if they offer it and/or if it's required.

I don't know if you would be interested in a sort of DIY type thing and a religious thing.  But I watched the movie Fireproof a few months ago and there is a book called fireproof your marriage.  It is a way that you can learn to build your relationship around God instead of yourself.  My FI and I are going to start the book after the new year.
