My FMIL just invited everybody on Facebook to our wedding

My FMIL was so excited that I'm marrying her son that she decided to post a facebook status update a few hours ago that says: OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT TO MY FACEBOOK FAMILY; My baby is engaged! Brad asked Gabi to marry him, they plan to tie the knot in August 2010!!!! CONGRATULATIONS TO THEM!SERIOUSLY.......CRUISE EVERYONE IS INVITED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THE MORE THE MERRIER, SO I WILL SEND DETAILS OUT WHEN AS I GET THEM!!!!!!!!!!!Beyond the obnoxious use of caps, I was completely unaware that we gave her carte blanche to invite anybody she wanted to our wedding.  In fact we didn't ask her for a guest list at all yet.  Fi and I are paying for everything and we envisioned a small wedding with 20ish people who are going to matter to us for a very long time.  I knew his mom was a flake but I think she's definitely gone way too far.  Normally she's pretty harmless and I want to laugh but I know I need to address this in a serious manner.  What to do???

Re: My FMIL just invited everybody on Facebook to our wedding

  • Really?!? I'm speechless! I agree it's not your job to deal w/ her. Send that one on to FI
  • Wowza's....I so cannot believe some people are seriously that clueless. Why on earth would she do that? Good luck!
  • Good. Lord! You could send this one to the guys over at nettiquette. They'd have a ball with it!I defo agree that if fmil isn't paying, she needs to shut her hole, and that it's FI's job to tell her so. jeepers!*m*

  • :::in complete awe!:::  :::trying to close gaping mouth right now:::
  • Thanks for all the replies and advice.  Since it was late, fi ended up sending her a text and will probably talk to her about it later today.  Since she is such a floozy, she really has no problem imposing upon people.  She lives 5 hours away but sometimes she'll just show up on our doorstep with about 1 hours notice and try to stay for a week!
  • I would have put under it, I am happy you are excited for us, but we actually are going to have a private ceremony.

  • Hahahaha.  I've been fighting the urge to say anything snarky!  Fi called her this morning and she said that she just did it so people would send us gifts.  How rude!
  • Lol gabi, the last post is hilarious :) Im sorry she's a floozy, but honestly, the upside is that noone really takes generalized Facebook invitations seriously (especially if it's "everyone's invited!"). People still like to feel special, and want an official invitation, so i highly doubt that some random person from FMIL's facebook friends will show up to your cruise :)
  • Wow!  I thought only MY mother did things like this.  I was copied on an email she sent out to approx. 30-40 people directing them to our wedding website.  Although, in her defense, she just "couldn't understand why someone would think they were invited to the wedding just because they were sent the link to the website!"  Hm, I think I need to check her FB page to make sure she didnt send out a mass message like your FMIL...
  • Congrats on your engagement! But, WTF with your FMIL.  I agree your FI should speak to her.  This is behavior you want to nip in the bud now before it gets out of hand.Good luck.
