Garter Autcioning/Dollar Dance?

To do or not to do?!
What are your thoughts on auctioning the garter and the dollar dance?  Should we do them at the wedding dance or are these both out of date and tacky?  My finance and I are trying to decide if this is acceptable now days since our guests have already brought a gift to the wedding.  Please help us out!

  • both tacky. next.
  • I have never heard of a garter auctioning. It sounds even tackier than a dollar dance.
  • Please don't.

  • Not.

What, exactly, would somebody do with a used garter?

  • I've never even heard of auctioning off the garter. People do this?
    Just say no.
  • OMG.  Why would anyone pay money for a used, sweaty garter?  Gross!

And no.  Say no to the dollar dance.

  • Skip both of them and anything else similar.  Please.  As a guest I hate the begging for money that goes with this, but also the time spent on it.

No, hun, I don't think you and your finance should auction off your garter.

  • Hey OP - as a fellow NoDaker I know what you're talking about.  I think these parts of the wedding dance are a regional preference.

I didn't want to do either of these things at my wedding, but when I voiced my plans, everyone thought I was nuts, especially the DJ.  These events are horrendously tacky, but most wedding guests up here love them and eat 'em up (and I have no idea why).

If you want to do them, I doubt you'll get a side eye from any of your guests.  We ended up having them at our wedding, and the guests loved it.

  • Dude. It's North Dakota. I've rarely ever been to weddings without these events. True story.

  • ...I'll back you up, Fishy - as ridic as it sounds, people DO think you're an idiot if you don't want a dollar dance or garter auction.  I think the cold weather freezes that part of our brains up here that tells you what is and isn't tacky.

Mostly these are considered tacky, but if they're expected in your circle, then I think you should feel free to do them.  We are not doing a dollar dance because FI's family isn't familiar with the tradition, but I know friends of ours (Polish family) are.

I think the garter auction's kind of... no... but it sounds like it's a regional thing.

  • I get that it's a regional thing.  Stag parties where you sell tickets are all anyone in my hometown area does for bachelor parties, and its what the guys start talking about as soon as you get engaged.  Seriously, H's friends were talking about his 10 minutes after they found out we got engaged.

Personally, I don't care for either but if it's customary where you live, I guess it's okay.  I prefer stripping for my money!

Dollar dances are really big in my family. We didn't do one, and my family members were so bummed out they guilt-tripped me about it for weeks after the wedding. However, they all put money in the card box that they had planned for the dance (which we didn't know until we got back from the HM), so we managed to get the moeny without the dance.

  • Ew. The only person I know who would probably pay money for my used garter is one who is emphatically not invited to the wedding on account of being a creepy stalker. Seriously. People really auction off the garter? WTF?

  • I've never heard of auctioning off the garter and it sounds terrible and tacky, so I say don't do it.

Dollar dances are pretty common at weddings in my hometown and we had one.  A lot of people here (who are all over the country) think they're tacky.  I really think it depends on your own crowd and what they will think.  If they are used to seeing dollar dances and know what they are, you have some leeway IMO.  If they don't know what dollar dances are, I say skip it and don't risk offending people.

  • Dollar dances are popular where I'm from, but I don't think we're going to do one because I don't like touching people.
