New to the DW board

Hi ladies! I have been lurking for a few wks. on the board & think you might be able to help me!I'm an only child & have a very small family my FI has 1 sibling & a very small family as well. I've always wanted to go away & get married but FI told me upfront his family would be disappointed & it wasn't an option. Since our engagement his Mother & I have had words & the relationship is VERY rocky (the things she has said are not something I can forgive, maybe in time but surely not by our wedding which we have planned for Sept. 4th, 2010 in our home town). Since all of this I have brought up a DW again w/my FI & I think he may actually be considering it. (The only reason he didn't want to at first was due to his family but they way they have treated me he is no longer worried about pleasing them, it's more about what WE want, what it should have been all along!)Anyway I will be going to Jamaica for Xmas w/my parents & FI (my parents go every Feb. for their wedding Anniversary & they 100% think I should do a DW). I guess I want to go away but want to make sure my FI is 100% in too, can you guys tell me a bit about you experience w/planning or if you have any regrets? Thanks Ladies!

    Hi & Welcome! I'm fairly new to this board too. Originally, I think my FI parents were a little disappointed & negative w/ our decision to get married in FL (we live in MA) but once they had a little time to look into it, they are really excited about it. Hopefully, your FI family will get on board eventually too. We still have 5 months til our wedding, but so far absolutely no regrets. It's just kind of difficult planning from afar.

    Congratulations on deciding to do what you want to do!  In the upcoming months, surround yourself with true friends.  They'll be happy for you and supportive of your wedding plans, even if they can't make it.

    Welcome to the best board on The Knot!The one piece of advice I give all the people wondering about whether to do a DW or not is simple - imagine yourself looking at your wedding album on your 25th anniversary.  Imagine that you're looking at a DW album, and then imagine the same scene only now you're looking at an at-home wedding album.  Which album are you looking at with a huge smile, and which one are you looking at and wishing you had chosen the other option?  That's how FI and I made our final decision.Like pp said - you are NOT going to please everyone, no matter which option you choose.  Even if you have a wedding at home, someone is going to whine about the menu, how far they have to drive, how they can't get a babysitter, they don't like chocolate cake, etc.  It is impossible to please everyone.  If you're going to please anyone, please yourselves.  If your FMIL wants to have a temper tantrum about the DW, forget her - she can stay home.  And if you planned your wedding around HER desires, there's no guarantee she'd even show up anyway if she's a witch like you described.  Why plan the wedding SHE wants and then end up not even having her there?  She will get over it.  And if she doesn't, it doesn't sound like a big loss anyway.Good luck to you and your FI and feel free to post here any time!

    hi and welcome to the best group of knotties around :). I agree 100% with pps, do what you want!!! As for our reasoning to do a DW. I've always wanted to get married on a beach and the Oregon coast jut isn't reliable. So we are now Mexico bound :). Our entire group of friends just love to travel together so it's been a no brained to choose somewhere most have not been. It also is going to be less expensive and stressful imo. The package we are looking at is about 1400 bucks for our ceremony, cocktail hour and reception. The resort we have *chosen* is going to be about 900 for 7 nights in am all-inclusive(ai) with airfare. So it's really affordable for our friends and family. Everyone is besidess themselves and I think a little jealous they didn't think of an international DW. We have heard nothing but excited responses. We have already counted some "cheaper" friends out. But we will be hosting an at home party about month after we get back!! Sorry I'm a long winded poster ;). HTH!!!
