Married Ladies: DMV Name Change

I'm going to get a new license this week. Does the DMV require a certified copy of your marriage certificate? TIA!

I went to a fast tags type place, and they took the original plus my ss card and made a photo copy.

Ok, thanks.  I only have 1 certificate left and I was hoping to send that to the passport office.  Guess I'll stop by the auto tags place first.

F cubed how much does a passport name change cost?

NCV- if you are changing your name on the passport within a year of getting it from the government, then it costs nothing.  There are forms to fill out, and it takes a few weeks, but it's free.If you are over a year from the original purchase date, then it will cost $100.

I went in person to the DMV in Malvern and they just photocopied my original certificate.  No need to give them a certified copy. Because of timing I actually did this before I did my S.S. card and it was just fine.

Ok, I just made the most bogus field trip EVER.  When I got married, someone told me to go to an auto tags office for my new license. My maiden name is now my new middle name.  Massachusetts (where I got married) doesn't issue a marriage certificate showing a middle name change, just a surname change.  SSA, my professional orgs, and all my financial institutions didn't blink an eye when I asked to change my middle name. The auto tags guy immediately told me that PennDOT would not allow me to change my middle name.  He said they would hypenate my name - which is NOT what I want.  He told me that PennDOT has jurisdiction over this and that SSA is run by idiots.  He also told me that he's seen tons of customers go through the same problem and that it can't be helped.  BTW, I wanted 1/2 hour in line to hear him say this.  Also, he told me that I'd have to pay $32, wait a week for the new forms to be sent in from Harrisburg, and then go to the DMV for a photo card.   I asked him if I should just go straight to the DMV to avoid all of this and he said warned me that the lines go all the way out the street and that PennDOT PREFERS drivers to visit tag agencies - not the DMV.  He also told me that the passport agency will force me to hypenate.I was so shocked and frustrated w/his responses, that I hightailed it to the Norristown SSA, where a rep promptly told me that the tag agent was an idiot.  They also told me that I should go to the DMV and never a tag agency.  Ughh.....so I drove to the DMV and it was soooo simple.  It cost $12, I didn't have to wait a week to get a new card, it took a total of 1/2 hour, and they had no issues with my new middle name. That turd at the tag agency must really be hurting for business. Sorry for the long post.To the PP, I just sent in my passport app.  I didn't have to pay anything.  Here's the link:http://travel.state.gov/passport/fri/ChangeName/ChangeName_851.html

Wow, I had the complete opposite experience. The DMV was HORRIBLE and the lines were at least an hour long. After making the trip 2 times, I went to a fast tags place by my house and had no problems.

Maybe I was just lucky with the DMV.  I went to the Norristown location and everything was run really efficiently.  I got my first license there a few years ago and it wasn't bad either. I just didn't trust this tag agent to process my paperwork.  He would've gotten my business if he didn't scare me with the name hypenation.  If I had the time, I would would've marched straight into his office to show him my new license with my correct name.  Maybe he was just misinformed.
