Am I the only one...

that takes her engagement ring off before going to bed?  The first night I had my ring, I took it off (scared something would happen to it in the hotel room bed).  Ever since, I have taken it off to sleep.  I mentioned it at work and my co-workers thought it was odd.  I am scared I will scratch my face in the middle of the night.  Am I alone on this??

  • I only wear mine when I am not at home.  I hate wearing stuff inside my house.  I just dropped FI off, and I come home, drop my purse off, take my ring off.

  • You're not alone. I take mines off too. The rock scratchee my FI a few times...LOL..he says my ring is dangerous. So, then I figured I didn't want to scratch myself either! I just make sure to put it in the exact same place every night so I don't freak out and can't find it.  :-)
  • I used to take it off (also when taking a shower and stuff) because it felt so heavy to me but i got used to it now, and usually keep it on. I tend to lose things, and would really not want to lose this... so i figure it's better if its on my finger!
  • I kind of flip-flopped on this actually.  :)  At first I always took it off before going to sleep and when taking a shower because I wanted to take good care of it.  Then, like you, I got flack from other people and started keeping it on. I soon found that wearing it in shower is bad because it gets caught in my hair and feels like it will slip off from the soap.  I no longer wear it when I sleep because I usually have my hands under my cheek or chin and it hurts my face if I'm wearing it!  So now I'm back to taking it off for both.  :)  Do what you feel comfortable with!

  • I put mine just before I get out of the house and take it off as soon as I get in. I hate wearing stuff in the house, that goes for jewelry, shoes and clothes.
  • I do the same as Normailed!
  • The one time I tried to sleep with the ring on, I could not fall asleep.  I was at my FMIL's house and was worried I didn't have my "special place" to put my ring.  I have no idea why I was worried about losing it - I mean she doesn't have pets, its highly unlikely that she would have accidently vacuumed up my ring in the middle of the night, and inanimate objects typically aren't able to walk to the bathroom and accidently fall into the sink.  So I left it on - at about 3am, without having fallen asleep, I decided to take my ring off and promptly fell asleep immediately.  Now, it is probably all in my head!
  • I wear mine to bed, but I don't wear it in the shower or anytime my hands get wet or dirty.  I love how much it sparkles so I don't like it to get dirty and I get it cleaned a lot.  (I'm a dork I know)  But when I have worn it in the shower it feels like I'm gonna loose it.  The first time I wore it in bed it drove me nuts, but now I'm used to it.

  • I don't wear mine at night or when I am doing stuff around the house.  I don't think it is odd, but I don't really wear any kind of jewelry at home.

  • I take mine off for bed and when I shower. I actually just took them off to put lotion on so they are sitting next to my mouse right now. I have a fear of losing it, but don't like wearing it all the time.

  • I wear mine non-stop, except when I have to scrub dishes.  But since we are on this topic...we are going to MX to relax and check out *our resort* and I am going back and forth about bringing my ring.  I will feel so naked without it.  But I do plan on snorkeling almost everyday and being in the water everyday.  WDYGT?!?!! I am SO torn, origionally I was completely agaisnt wearing/bringing it.  But now I keep having awful thoughts of what if the house gets broken into, roommate has someone over and she is showing them and it gets misplaced?!?!  Dog eats it!  Yes it would be in my jewelery box, but that just doesn't seem the same as on my finger!!!I guess my real question is....is it okay to wear in the Ocean?  It's a solitaire diamond, and I assume it is, but do you have advice for me?!?!TIA!  And sorry for spelling errors.

  • I'm trying to think of anytime I take mine off... honestly I only take it off when I put on lotion because the lotion gets on it and in it and makes it look all dull. Other than it's on 24/7. In the beginning it bothered me but we were in Paris and I was deahtly afraid of losing it there, so I just never took it off. Now if I take it off it feels weird.
  • Autzen - I always keep my valuables in the room safe when I'm not using them.  In Jamaica my ring will be spending any "beach time" in the safe!
  • Mrs.McC....this may sound so snooty/parionod of me, but can't people at the hotel access the vault?!?!!  A little background, I've neer owned anything worth 6 grand, let alone on my finger and I have never been out of the country.  We are staying at the Wyndham and I am just a little concerned because we chose that resort because it was the cheapest available.  Sorry if I offended anyone, that was not my idea at all, I just don't want anything to happen to my ring!!

  • " is it okay to wear in the Ocean?"Absolutely not! Do not wear it on the ocean. You know how your fingertips get wrinkly when you are in the water too long? Well your finger shrink and you can loose it your ring very easily. On this board I've heard about many grooms coming back with no ring. In only one of the cases a diver from the resort found the ring after they lost it in deep water; but usually once they are gone, they are gone forever.Put it in the safe or as I usually do I wrap it in some imposible place to guess by the cleaning crew.

I know for my protection plan, I can do anything but lose the entire ring and it will be covered 100% by the jeweler. For exanple - if diving in the ocean and I lose the center stone, it will be replaced...And, Heaven forbid this actually happens, if I lose the ring entirely or it's stolen, it's covered under homeowners insurance.

  • Normailed, I didn't even think about my fingers shirnking.  Leslie, yes we have it under homeowners and jewelery insurance. Although FI is out of town this week and said he took care of it, I will have to double check with him this weekend.  Okay....so as of now I think I am going to bring it.  Do you think just putting it in my back pack-it's a hiking bag that I am bringing with a GAZILLION pockets will be okay?

  • My insurance agent was my first call after family and close friends.  I added the ring to my homeowners for less than $150/yr.  Worth it if anything happens!  If you leave the ring at home - you might think about a safety deposit box at a bank.  But, I would take the ring on vacay with you...  what's the point in having the ring if you can't show it off?  We are going to PR for a long weekend trip in Dec and I will definitely be taking it!
  • I just won't be wearing it when I sleep...
  • I take mine off before bed every night and don't put it back on until I'm ready to leave the house. Occasionally I'll be in a hurry and forget to put it on and have to turn around and go back for it because I feel naked without it now.
  • When you get in your room you reset the code to whatever you want.  I guess somebody must have access to it in case you forget your code but personally I feel much safer keeping my belongings in the safe than anywhere else.  Your maid certainly would not have access.
  • Thanks for putting my mind at ease ladies :)  We got the insurance re-assestment thing in the mail since our one year house anniversary is this weekend!!  But I can't understand that thing for the life of me!!!I almost feel like I need to give my bling a nick-name, we nick-name almost everything else, including our Garmin!!

  • OK, not to scare you here but my parents stayed at a resort in Cancun (I'm thinking it was the Dreams resort) and someone stole their credit cards out of the safe in their room.  My mother was so shocked because she didn't think anyone could get in there and they had changed the code and had been so careful about it.  Just an FYI that it does happen.

  • I take my ring off before going to bed, when I shower, put on lotion, wash dishes, or do deep cleaning.  I have a crazy setting that has lots of places for gunk to build up and I don't want my ring to get dull. We've always used hotel safes without a problem.  The last few times, we've had to use a credit card instead of a pin #.  I try to carry one of those cc's you get in the mail when you're "pre-approved" for something just in case the safe is able to read cc #'s.
  • I really didn't expect this outcome to my original post!   I now know if taking my ring off to sleep is "odd", there are a lot of other great "odd" ladies on the DW board!  Thanks!
  • I usually leave the stuff in the safe, and if I don't trst the place at all...I'll put it inside a dirty, sock wraped in dirty underwear with the dirty laundry...I don't think anyone will willingly search people's dirty underwear...and hey...better dirty then stolen, right?
  • Nope you are not the only one.  I take my ring off to wash the dishes, for showers and when I go to bed at night.
  • I def do not sleep with my ring on or shower with it.  Pretty much it goes on right before I leave the house and most of the time it comes off when I get home and goes in the jewelry box.  I guess its not an "odd" thing after all!  It's funny to know how many ppl actually do this! Autzen, I'm glad you asked that ? because I've been thinking about that a lot lately.  I def wasn't planning on wearing my ring for beach activities/swimming/etc, but I was wondering about the safes in the resort.  I'm actually on the look out for a nice cheap right hand ring that could function as my "wedding ring" if needed for the trip and for my job (I work in a hospital and may be starting in a surgical field where a big e-ring would not work well).
