Quick Poll...

I have chosen not to change my last name (been working in the same service industry for 15 years, name recognition/branding means a lot as I am relying on my reputation and as a woman it would be really hard to start over!).  Before kids, I will probably legally take FI's last name, but continue to use my maiden name publicly.I was wondering if anyone else out there was planning on keeping their maiden name?

Re: Quick Poll...

  • I still haven't decided. My last name has heritage and character, and my Fiance's last name is boring (shh... don't tell him I said that). There's some other post a while back with this question and some girls mentioned changing there last name but then adding there maiden name as there middle name... I'll possibly do that.
  • For professional purposes as well as the fact that I dig my last name and I want to honor my dad, i'll be moving my maiden name to my middle name. I was:  Cristina Leigh Fakename Now I'll be: Cristina Fakename FI'sName This way I can do all the changing at once, it will be done for when we have kids, but I can still go by my maiden name when I need to.
  • I debated this for a while and after talking to several girlfriends and family who recently got married, they all debated this as well.  I know I am going to take FI's last name.  But am now debating if I want to add my last name as a 2nd middle name.  I know for sure I will not drop my middle name for my maiden because it was my great-grandmother's name.
  • I am taking my FI's name.  We have a son together and I want us all to have the same last name.  But I think nowadays it's a lot more common for women to keep their own name.  I have two girlfriends who did that and are perfectly happy with their decision.  It really is a very personal decision.  Good Luck~
  • I will be since I use my ex's name now, it would be weird to get married and change to my maiden name. I knwo that would hurt FI's feelings. If I had not changed to ex's (did it becuase of my son) then I would have kept my maiden name as you are suggesting.
  • I am taking FI's name. My last name has no meaning for me, plus my dad was adopted, so it technically isn't really a family name. I have been a Realtor for 5 years, so I hesitated on whether I should change, not change or hyphenate. Ultimately I decided to change, because it means so much to FI and I can make sure all of my past clients know about my change. Have you ever thought about hyphenating or using your maiden name for work? I've seen ladies who have 2 business cards - 1 with their married name and 1 with their maiden, so they basically go by both.
  • Ditto Mrsm - I want all 3 of us to have the same last name.  And while I like my last name, I don't feel particularly attached to it.My bff took her dh's last name, and used her maiden name as her middle name.  She is a Dr. so it was important for her to maintain her reputation.  Her legal name is Sarah Maidenname DHsLastname.  Her diplomas all say Sarah Maidenname.  Her patients refer to her as Dr. Maidenname but all her mail and private stuff is addressed as Sarah DhsLastname.  It's confusing but it works for her.
  • I'm keeping mine - was never an issue for me.  But you need to do what's right for you.
  • I agree to do what's right for you.  I'm changing mine.  I can't imagine not changing mine though.  We have a child together and I've been called by his last name for years by Dr's offices and such because our son has the same last name as his father.  But I want for my family to have the same last name and not just have me be the oddball.
