DJs

How did you all decide on a DJ?  Did you seen them "perform"? Did they provide you with references?   I am extremely nervous about picking a DJ -- mostly because the last thing I remember from some of the weddings I have attended is how terrible the DJ was.  The problem is, I am not sure if that's what the bride and groom wanted, or if it was just the DJ.    Any suggestions or advice?

Re: DJs

  • Our friend is a DJ at a local radio station, so he does all our friends' weddings.

  • We met our DJ while he was setting up for a wedding at a local resort. The company offered to provide references, but we also wanted to 'kick the tires' so to speak. When we met him in person, we were so pleased. The company already received great reviews, but it made the difference to us to meet him in person.

  • Look for references, definitely. We booked our DJ through a very well respected service in town. The best part about it was that the DJ came to the local starbucks and met us twice for an hour each time before the wedding...the first time was before we signed a contract or put any money down. That way we were able to chat about music preferences, etc. Conversation is a way better way to determine how your wedding music will go than playlists IMO. I think finding a good DJ that can read the crowd is better than coming up with a lot of "must play" songs.
  • I booked my DJ sight unseen purely for the price. He was great, I guess I was lucky.

  • My DJ this time is an iPod....   For my first marriage, I had a band. He was a friend of mine, and I trusted him - he played live, but also played CDs of songs I wanted. Advice? Read reviews, shop around, ask for recommendations, but know that they will also ask for recommendations of people they know were happy with their service. Try to find unbiased sources. Talk to your coordinator if you have one, or if you have a venue, see if they've worked with people in the past. Go to clubs.

  • We booked our DJ based on recommendations from my local board.  The problem with going to listen to a DJ at someone else's wedding is that your taste of music may be different than that bride and groom's, so you'll think it was bad, but it may be just what they wanted.

  • btw, I read this chat from a local magazine before actually booking this guy's service. It's a good read and gives you some stuff to think about: http://www.washingtonian.com/chats/shopping/9432.html
  • i picked mine because although he comes highly recommended and its one of the most expensive around, his "off season discount" of 50% off starts on november 1, my wedding day. im paying slightly less than most dj's, for what everyone says is "overpriced but worth it".
  • I'm also super picky when it comes to DJs. There's a LOT I consider cheesy -- and nothing against the knot, but I just don't trust a lot of people's musical leanings here.I just wanted someone with cool, eclectic taste who would mostly STFU during the reception. So I scoured the indiebride.com boards. I felt like those girls were more in tune with my musical tastes. I read recommendations there, e-mailed 3 people, met with 2, hired 1 (after checking his references).
