Dress Pictures/Advice

I am going to be wearing the same dress that my mother/grandmother wore for their weddings. Not only does it mean a lot to them, but it is special to me as well. I have had some alterations done at the tailor, but am concerned that it still looks **too** outdated. Thoughts? What a sweet sentiment! Anyhoo, there's something about the boobs and the pleats in the skirt that make it look outdated to me.... What did it look like to begin with?

How do you feel in it? Self-conscious? I think you look stunning in it. Very classic.

But the important thing is that YOU feel comfortable in it and beautiful.

I think it's totally gorgeous, but I'm wearing a vintage dress, too.I think once you get it altered and throw a crinoline under it, it will look great.

The only thing that stands out as outdated to me is the waist line, but I don't think it's that bad. I think the top is gorgeous!I think it's a beautiful sentiment and you should absolutely wear it - it could be a LOT worse! Besides, I think the word will spread and everyone will know.

I do love it and feel pretty. The dress is not the most important thing to me and I think part of what makes me love it is the history. This is what it looked like before...pic is old, so a little grainy[img ]http://snipurl.com/s02iz[/img ]

The waist makes it look a little outdated to me. I think its because its higher than a waist band we would have now. Maybe if you covered the waist with a sash or lace belt? I think its so cool though that you are wearing their dress! My mom eloped to Reno...so there was no family dress to even think about using!

I'm going to be completely honest and say that I liked it better before alteration. The sleeves were much better suited to the dress and less awkward.Also, get some cups sew in.

LOL i think if my mom had bought a dress in the 70s it would have been HORRID. However, its my grandma's 1952 Priscilla of Boston (the very first shop that they opened in Boston) and the 50s were much better than the 70s!

MrsB- before me the dress had been tailored for a cousin who was a size ONE....it didn't even button...this was the first time I was actually able to put it on!

Other than the very top (Which honestly, looks like you can probably fix this by wearing the right under garments), this looks really good. And actually, the top doesn't really look "dated", it just looks like its not doing your boobs any justice.I loves it!

amber- i agree. we are having cups sewn into the boobs, they don't fit now.i am not sure there is anything i can do about the pleats.

i expected to hate it, but i think it looks really pretty. i think i'd like it better without the necklace because the neckline is very pretty and detailed and i feel like the necklace takes away from it and shortens your neck area a bit!

I think the dress is seriously gorgeous. The fabric and neckline details are so rich and timeless. Like pps said, it could use some tweaking in the bust area. I wouldn't add a sash though - it would compete with the neckline too much. You see how the skirt starts with a "V" shape? Maybe you could alter it so that it's a clean, straight line and wear a huge crinoline skirt underneath. BTW, seeing this dress really made my day. It's so nice to have family heirlooms to pass on. Thanks for sharing!!

wow- thats scary...i don't want to take that info out since its the site my guests use, so I will just remove it for here. Maybe make a separate (less informative) one for theknot.jessiegirl- i am still working on the sleeves. I like the off the shoulder look and I wanted to preserve some of the original lace that was on there, but now I can't lift my arms "as-is". I have to talk to someone about what I can do about that.

You could make a website that is not knottie-accessible and just for your guests, and a website of pictures of all of the things you're planning to do for knotties to look at. Also, fishy is right. I heard of a crazy lurker showing up at wedding once and ruining the whole day.

I love the dress. I agree with the others that it needs a few minor adjustments in the bust/waist, and I understand that it's not a final fitting pic or anything. I think the "V" in the waist could be altered to be more flattering/look less dated--but honestly, I don't think that anyone will pay attention to that when you are radiant on your wedding day. I kind of wonder what a wide sash would do...like a la Grace Kelly wedding dress (you can google it, I don't dare attempt PIP). If done well it could be gorgeous, if done poorly it could "chop you in half" and make you look short.

Of course it looks dated its old. But it cant just be about the fashion for you. It has to be about wearing the dress your mom and grandma wore right? Its beautiful for that reason alone and it is very pretty on you.

engaged2q- i thought about a sash as well. my only concern is that it would be too much with all the other detail up at the bodice...Also, i don't want to look any shorter. I am 5'2" and the ceremony is going to be barefoot on the beach lol

The dress is beautiful - you've done a great job of bringing it up to date. You mentioned you'll be having cups put in, so that will take care of that... The waistline, however, could be improved. Maybe you could smooth it out by having some matching lace cover it?

expatpumpkin- i think i will look at some pics of other vintage dresses and see what can be done. FI and I are **hopefully** in the process of moving closer to home within the next couple months, so I want my current tailor to finish the parts she is working on and then i may take it to someone about that after we move. I'm just afraid to start any other parts of it at the moment.
