Long Vent ( dog vet)

I swear tomorrow I'm going to completely snap on the Emergency Vet clinic here in my county. I told Shelli all about this earlier, but I'm getting really worked up. In March of this year both my dogs (Lilly & Jasmine) were attacked in my fence by a random dog. How it got in there, I don't know unless it jumped the fence. My dogs were hurt bad trying to defend themselves against this animal. If it weren't for my nieghbors, Lilly my 11 year old Dalmation would have been hurt badly. My Lab, Jasmine protected Lilly and got hurt too. My Dad took them to the E.R. vet in town and I left work and went there. The vet gave me the impression that Lilly could die from these injuries. She is my baby!!! I've had her since her birth and she has outlasted every man in my life! They told me that they could save her and that her quality of life would be the o.k. The estimated bill was $1,000. I thought nothing of it and signed the papers....wouldn't you? I paid with the money I had saved up for my studio and never complained. She is my baby and all the blood on her white furr made it look so bad. She was walking on her own and consious, but of course I was very scared. My lab Jas needed stitches in three gashes on her legs (that was all) and the estimate was $400. Barry paid it over the phone by credit card and never complained. Again, Jas is our other baby and we love her. They were both treated and released hours later and I stayed home for a few days to care for them. I received pain meds and antibiotics for each dog. When I took them both for their follow up apt with our regular vet I told him what happened and about the price. He went NUTS! He wrote down all of their injuries and said it shouldn't have cost up more than $500-600 for BOTH dogs!!! He said what they charged me was ridiculous and embarressing and that they should be ashamed. He said Lilly would never have died from her injuries because they were only surface wounds and no internal damage was done. He took it to the vet board in town and filed a complaint against them. He couldn't get me any money back, but at least someone stood up for us. A few months later they sent me a bill in the mail for "additional medical services" for $240! This is bulls***! I refused to pay them and for the past month they have been calling me and leaving nasty message about this effecting my credit. Well, tomorrow me and the fiance are going up there and I'm going to snap! My regular vet told me to threaten to turn them into the N.C. vet association and to the Better Business Bureau and that's exactly what I'm going to do. And I might not just threaten, I might just freakin do it! I'm pissed and I told my sweet fi that if me showing my a** was going to embarress him then he'd better stay in the car! I don't do good at holding back my emotions and this has pushed me to the edge. I'm a very blunt woman and this is going to be war!!!Am I overeacting here???Thanks girls for letting me vent and everyone that read all the details of this please treat yourselves to a big alcoholic beverage!!!

Re: Long Vent ( dog vet)

  • Yea, I would be pissed too.  However, I avoid the Pet ER at all costs because they charge ridiculous amounts for service.  I had to take my baby (my cat) a couple of years ago because she had gotten out and got in a fight in the middle of the night.  I don't remember how much the bill was but it was A LOT! Your vet probably is taking that into consideration though so go ahead and do what you need to.  GL!
  • Wow, big HUGS for you!! My furbaby (Chloe) had a small surgery and reacted to the pain meds (fell over, started shaking and couldn't stand) and I rushed her to our normal vet, hysterical, so I cannot imagine what seeing her covered in blood would have done to me.  Can you contact another ER vet and see what their charges for the list your vet came up with would be (to get an equal comparassion), I would also go in with the list of those charges and ask to see a detailed reciept of what was done to your babies. Good luck tomorrow, let me know if you need any screaming assitance because after work today I am more than willing :)
  • This makes me so angry! Those people knew how much you loved your dog and would do anything to make sure she was okay and they took advantage. And the "additional medical services"....are you kidding me?? That is beyond outrageous! I'd be super pissed. I'm so sorry you have to deal with these people  :( Good luck tomorrow. And please turn them in to the BBB and the vet association!
  •  I would report them.  My mom has been to at least ten different evets and they are all over priced, but they also usually do a shotty job or elaborate the injuries, in your case.  We have an evet in town that requires a $1000 down payment before they even look at the pet, and the have FLAT SCREEN TVS in there waiting room.  It makes me SO angry.  If I didn't see animals as beings, not just animals I would open a fair cost e-vet.  It makes me SO incredibly mad that they should be there to help the animal not distress the parents EVEN more!!!We are SO extremely lucky to have the best vet in town for my mom's greyhounds and will wake up in the middle of the night to help them.My moms have 23 greyhounds, they rescue and "foster" retired racers.  So we have had to deal with allot of bad accidents and it just never seems to be a good experience.I am SO sorry that this evet has treated you so unkindly.  Don't they know that word of mouth is the best or worst advertisement?!?!!!Hang in there and do what's right for all the other families who might not have the funds to help their furbabies!

  • Ugh- how awful for you to be going through this.  I understand completely, I would give a kidney to my dog if it came down to it! I think you should do whatever it takes to be given a fair price!  And if your vet really feels you got ripped off, I would trust his opinion.  Even if they do allow the $240 to slide, I would still report them for the sake of others!  GL hun!!!
  • I would be livid! The way those places take advantage of people is ridiculous. I really try to avoid those places, but sometimes it can't be helped. I would be causing a scene there too and then I would report them either way b/c I wouldn't want them to do the same thing to someone else who doesn't want to say something about it. I'm really sorry they screwed you like that and are trying to do it again. GL tomorrow! Let us know how it goes
  • It's amazing how we would all sign the paperwork no matter how much money it would cost - pets truly are like kids.  It's shameful that people take advantage of that fact :(  Go get 'em!
  • You have got to let us know how this goes today!I too was "scammed" by the Vet E.R. in Indy.  It was years ago, it was my loving kitty, and he ended up having gallstones.  I could tell that he was in so much pain and they too told me that he could die (which I guess was true really, butttttt...).  So $800 later he was better.  When I informed our regular vet of said bill, he too about fell over!  Come to find out it would have been under $200 there!  But I was panicked at the time.I was told that there was really nothing I could do but NOT GO THERE AGAIN (couldn't get my money back or anything either). So YOU GO, GIRL!  Stand up for us all who have been manipulated into spending too much because our furry-forever-friends (KIDS) hold a huge place in our hearts!GL!
