NWR: Recommend a good apartment searching site?

DH and I are searching for a new place but since I'm searching long-distance I have to do the initial screening online.  Can anyone recommend a good nationwide website for finding apartments?  I've used rent.com and apartmentratings.com and they're decent but any recommendations would be appreciated!

A word of warning from your friends at Cracked.com: Remember that text is going to be how you make your first impression over the internet; if every third word you type is misspelled, people will automatically assume that you're a moron.

  • Apartmentfinder.com

When searching for a house I also used Google Map's Street View to check out the area. Some sounded great but the street view showed the area to be really really bad!

  • We used
    www.apartments.com
    www.rent.com

And I think FI used www.forrent.com (they put out books, the free ones at the grocery). I THINK that's the site that has furniture you can arrange for space planning.

Then usually used www.apartmentratings.com for the ratings once we found something we liked.

  • We seriously used craigslist. It's more than just for solicitation ;)

  • Craigslist, for sure. I've found a lot of apartments through there.

  • BAD experiences with Craigslist so that one's out I'm afraid :(

  • You said you're going to be moving just north of LA, right?  I am not quite sure but check out Westsiderentals.com.

  • South of LA, actually.

  • Westsiderentals, then, for sure. I didn't know about that! I found the apartment I'm in now through them. They are exclusive to LA. They cost $60 for 3 months, but everyone I know who has used them thinks it is worth it, including me.

  • We used rent.com but we never got the $100 for using them. After we found mice in our apartment I did a better search and discovered apartmentratings.com LOVE that website. So after you find one on rent.com go to apartmentratings.com and find out what people are saying. Like here it's based on expereinces so I take it with a grain of salt but it was helpful. Stay away from craigslist several of my friends were scammed on that.
