I guess some people arn't feeling the recession....

So I called a seamstress that had placed an ad for her services on Craigslist.com.  I told her I was interested in having a dress made similar to a Jim Hjelm piece.  She asked me how much the dress cost, I said I believe between $3,000-5,000.  So she tells me that with her time and the cost of material she would end up charging me $2000.00 to make the dress.  I told her that my budget was $800.00 and that I would pay for the fabric.  That wasn't good enough for her.  This lady must be on crack if she thinks I'm going to pay her to make a dress that I could end up buying instead and getting the designers quality work and brand.  Some people's kids! And if she's so in demand and can get paid what she thinks she's worth then why is she posting on craigslist?? I hope the search for a seamstress doesn't leave me dissappointed :o(

  • I'm jumping in late but I put an ad on the Etsy.com alchemy site and dress makers bid on my dress, which was the Jim Hjelm 8813. The dressmaker I decided on had made other replicas before and sent me photos. She is making the dress and shipping it to me for $565. This might be something you want to try. You can name your price and they decide if they can help you. You get all the control.
