Such mixed emotions

My sister and BIL sold their house in Bloomfield and are leaving Sat. to find a house in Mt. Juliet, TN (15 minutes out of Nashville). I'm so happy for them but sad that they will be moving and my mom with be moving with them. She just sent me a listing of a house, 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, built in pool with a killer deck and patio. The list price is $313,000. What are we doing wrong here in Jersey! Oh, and the property tax is only $1,700 a year. We pay almost that a month!

    Im sorry that they are moving and your upset.  I know how your feel its def crappy!  Nashville is awesome though, maybe you will want to make a change too.  We are doing everything wrong in NJ.  They should have regular people run the state not these corrupt schmucks(sp) that we have to choose from each election.  Its just terrible that people like us Knotties who are starting out start out way behind.

    Oh Irene I'm sorry they are going. I know what it's like to be so close and have your family so far. But you are right! Property value is much much higher here. Our house is newer and just about the same size as my moms in jersey, and we paid HALF of what hers is. It's the convenience of being so close to the city I guess.

    Mh's brother lives in Warwick and my son lives in JC, so that's good. My sister was like a mother to me growing up (my mom was sick a lot). We only got close again about 2 years ago, so it is very bitter sweet. I don't even want to think of my mom not being here :(

    That stinks.  My mom moved down to NC years ago and my sister is in upstate NY.  I miss them both so much and we just never have enough time together. Nashville is amazing, as are the suburbs around it.  It is just unbelievable how much more you get outside of this area.  I sometimes wonder, what the heck am I still doing here? Do I really want to pay $500,000 for a freaking 1000 sq. foot condo?  Dealing with traffic and pollution and all of the stress?  oy vie!

    That is sad. =( It's hard to be away from family--I know it all too well! But you have a reason to visit TN now!Any reason why they picked there?

    Once my sister graduates college, she's staying in NC and my mom is moving down there. I'm gonna be lost without her, but it's just so much cheaper down there. We went to one of those living south expos at a hilton and for the house I just bought, our taxes would have been $850 for the entire year.

    its sad that they are moving.  My brother just moved to Utah.  He has a house bigger than mine for less than $200K and his taxes are $800 a year.  He keeps telling me to move out there.  The more he calls and tells me about it the more I want to go.

    My sisters son went to school and Nashville, got married and stayed (he's 23) so they def have a reason to relocate.

    I traveled to most of the 50 states, and have looked into real estate in a few at one time or another.  I can honestly say in my area's outside NJ/NY, you can make a better living...even with a lower salary.Examples...My Sister/Bro in law bought a newer large colonial on a 1/2 acre 30 mins outside philly for under 400K, with about 4500 property taxes...and they make city salaries in Philly.My wife's sister just bought a 4 bedroom house NEW in Oregon for 290K with 3500 property taxesMy friends Mom just bought a HUGE home in NC decked out with upgrades and a pool for 250K with 2 acres of property and super low taxes.Even making double their salaries in NJ, still wouldn't be able to afford the 800-900K and 20K taxes it would take to buy comparable homes in North Jersey.Makes ya think..........

    I totally feel your pain. My sister moved to California and I miss her and my niece and nephews so much. They are 5 and under and I feel like I missed a big part of them growing up. She tries to talk me and FI into moving out there all the time...but I have two other sisters and my mom in NJ....I don't know what we are gonna do when we are ready for a house because I don't think we will be able to afford NJ.
