Where to go in January

I'm looking for some suggestions for a good honeymoon spot in January. Unfortunately, we don't have a ton of money... our budget is around $2000 and we need that to include airfare, hotel and probably food. We're willing to just pay for whatever alcohol we drink while we're there. We want somewhere tropical with a beach, but maybe other activities as well. Thanks!

  • Unfortunately airfare right now is very expensive. However, with $2000 you could probably purchase an airfare/hotel package at an all-inclusive resort for five nights or so in Cancun/Riviera Maya, Dominican Republic, or Jamaica.

Alternatively, you could probably also fly into San Jose, Costa Rica and stay a week and head to either the Nicoya Peninsula or Manuel Antonio. Last year I spent four nights in Nosara (beachtown on the Nicoya Peninsula) and paid about $70-$80 for a bed and breakfast. I have more information on that trip here: http://wanderlusttraveler.blogspot.com/2011/04/nosara-and-nicoya-costa-rica.html

I second the cruise idea. Ordinarily it is fairly affordable to the Caribbean to an all-inclusive but that's the heart of winter and you may find airfare a little higher than usual. However, USair HAS been offering really competitive fares out of Philly to Jamaica (we went in November for $320) so if you start looking about 3 months out, you may luck into one of those great tickets. If so, a very affordable all-inclusive resort in Jamaica is the Royal Decameron (about $160 per night for 2), that would totally fit your budget. It's not as upscale as a Sandals, Secrets or Couples, etc. but it is perfectly nice, caters to a young crowd, and no extra cost for the penthouse (there are only 2 and they're pretty nice with a great view and huge private deck) or a room that opens on to the beach if you call them directly and arrange ahead of time.

Cruises tend to give a good bang for your buck.  Heading south to Central America can also be inexpensive and still a lot of fun.  Look into booking with a tour group; they can have some pretty great deals.  I write for a company called Absolute Latin America that does trips all over the area and their tours often include a lot for the price they charge.  I'll be honest; I've never been on a tour, I just write about them, but it's something to look into :)
